The 2nd day of Uktar in the Year of the Ruins Reborn.

Another small victory on our path to civilisation has been earned today. Fafnir, our Dwarven miner, has successfully brought back the first iron ore deposits from the initial mine cuttings to the north of Blackengorge.

Fafnir, his wife Freyr, and son Hannarr have been hard at work for the last few months cutting into the rocky cliffs through the woods to the north of the village and carving out the start of a viable mine. It has been hard work with long days, but their endurance has seemed immense. The two guards that accompanied them every day, on Valino’s request, state they have never seen such industry. The hillfolk also seem to be as happy and contented as we have ever seen them, glad to be of real use to the community and pursuing work that they crave and love.

The iron and copper ores have been passed to Caldring in the smithy for inspection. She should be able to use these to create both iron and steel necessities, and we will not be reliant on the mainland for farming tools or bands for cart wheels, or any of the other items we took for granted on The Islands.

The mine will also provide good stone for further building, although some of this is harder to transport back to the village. Fafnir reports that the cliffside was blackened on the surface, as though a great layer of soot had fused with the rock itself, but the stone underneath is lighter in colour and will make great blocks ready for carving.

Work has already started on preparing a specialised cart to bring back some of the stone, with one of the oxen being trained to pull it, and a small group of us priests ventured up to the mine to witness His Radiant Servant bless the entrance on behalf of Pelor.

Perhaps now further buildings and fortifications can be made to the village, ready for those that follow us.
