The 28th day of Eleasias in the Year of the Ruins Reborn.

With a dozen buildings now standing, and solid stone towers at the west gate, this place is feeling more and more like a real town. The decision has been made to make an east gate as well. A low simple bridge will cross the moat at the east edge of the town, with a trail leading down to the lakes’ edge. There is already a good worn trail building up around the town, mostly having been trodden in by the Priests going up to the Crypts to tend to the old tombs.

A Midsummer’s Night’s Scheme

He walked out from the alley onto the broad, cobbled dock. Despite the late hour the air was still warm, the day’s heat dissipating into the clear, star-filled sky. Boats and ships of all sizes filled the large, wide, sweeping bay, illuminated by soft white moonlight.

On each side the dock gently curved around away from him. The alley he had exited came out onto the docks roughly in its centre. The docks took the shape of a huge semi-circle, with piers jutting out into the calm waters like spokes of a broken wheel. Lining the outer edge of the cobbled dock were buildings of all types, mostly warehouses, and larger properties owned by merchants who plied the trade routes between the islands. Mixed in with these, and all along the main streets running out into the city, were numerous small market stalls, selling fish and wares fresh off the ships. Most of the more wealthy merchants worked out of Deepingwald, making the dock area a bustling hub of activity through the day. Now, however, in stark contrast, there was hardly another person in sight.

The 8th day of Flamerule in the Year of the Ruins Reborn.

Our good spirits were lifted still higher a few days ago when sails were sighted out on the Western Seas. The Guiding Fire was back once again.

Our attempt to contact the Islands via magical means failed, as we feared it may, but here was the chance to see how the news of our success so far was received back home, and a chance to send more news their way.

The 2nd day of Flamerule in the Year of the Ruins Reborn

Today has been a day of great celebration. Our plan proved most effective. All the Priests and Clerics came together for a great group casting. Though it was made in Pelor’s name, they had the decency to also offer a prayer to Kord.

We stood in a huge ring over by where their shine is taking shape. The rest of the Folk stood about us in great excitement. Only the newly nominated council knew what we were going to do. When the ritual was over, the chanting had stopped and the glow of magic had subsided, there in the centre of the ring was a feast, fit for an army of one hundred. The Folk were amazed and delighted. Everyone will eat well this day, and there is enough to replenish our stores for weeks. We have already begun drying and curing meats.

The 27th day of Kythorn in the Year of the Ruins Reborn.

There has been no communication with the Islands, but no-one seems to mind so much. Things are developing with great pace. Our craftsfolk have erected a number of simple dwellings that protect us from the rains far better than our tents have done. The stockade is over half complete, and I must confess work on it has greatly slowed. It seems to have become less and less of a priority. Ordinarily I would not let this happen, but even I find myself agreeing, for once, with Captain Barghest, that permanent buildings are what are needed most of all right now.

Indeed this place is almost too perfect. Much of the central area is protected by the moat, and a steep banking. The entry-way will be easy to fortify. There is enough space to construct a small town or keep. Eventually, the land around the moat can be cleared of trees as well. For now, however, all buildings will be in the central area.

The 4th day of Kythorn in the Year of the Ruins Reborn.

It is almost too good to be true, if what the scouts say is accurate. Not far inland, almost due east of this very spot, they came upon ruins. It seems long ago there was a castle, or temple there. They report there are still some low walls and an abundance of stone. Best of all, the main ruin is raised above the surrounding land, and has a defensive moat almost all the way around. It is as if Kord Himself has provided us with the perfect location on which to build a more permanent outpost.

For now there is time to rest, though I know not how long it will last. These past two days have been hard for all, particularly the townsfolk. The journey across the seas was rough. The waters close to the mainland almost seemed to want to keep us at bay, trying to prevent us at long last carrying the beacon of light and civilisation back to world. Privately I welcomed these signs; they tell me the mainland will be hard to win.
