D&D 4E in Google Wave – Encounter’s End

0

In a previous post I discussed some of the mechanics and processes were are putting into our Google Wave game to help speed up some of the more mundane and often used aspects of the game while trying to keep the narrative and gameplay enjoyable.

In this post I describe what we are trying to do when an encounter had completed.

D&D 4E in Google Wave – Marching On Together!

0

On our Google Wave game our intrepid adventurers have descended into the depths of an old ruin in an attempt to find a missing elven scout. As they started to explore the rooms and chambers in the depths it became apparent that lots of rooms with lots of options of what to do led to a little confusion and a slowdown in the game.

Not all of the players are able to post continuously – we all have day jobs and some of us don’t have access to the Internet during the day. With time zones to contend with also (one of the players now lives in the US) we needed to work together to come up with ways to keep the game moving but with none of the interest, surprise, or choices being compromised too much.

Hopefully, we’re on the road to solving some of these issues, and the tips below may help you within your Wave games, or even within the realtime online environment or even the tabletop.

Visitors!

The 10th day of Ches in the Year of the Sudden Journey.

I write this in the late hours by candlelight in The Bronze Lion where much cheer and relief are mixed with so many other emotions. Not only have our two missing sons been returned to the town safe and well, but we have our first visitors to our town, as adventurers have made the crossing from The Islands to the Old Continent!

As always, as it seems with out little town, the cheer and joy is mixed with trepidation and sadness. It seems that the adventurers have had quite a tale to tell.

Boys Will Be Boys

Overheard in The Bronze Lion Inn, as Skillet talks surreptitiously to a beleaguered customer.
The 9th day of Ches in the Year of the Sudden Journey.

“Well, there’s going to be no cloth made at this rate,” Skillet stated across the bar, cleaning a tankard absent-mindedly. “Matilda and Effie are worried sick about their boys, and furious at the Council for not doing anything yet.”

The little halfling put down the tankard on the bar area and glared at it studiously. Deciding it needed further attention he picked it up once more and resumed his ritual cleaning, continuing his rather one-sided conversation.

“Boys will be boys, and Offa and Bailey do work hard on the fields, so they are allowed to have some fun from time to time, but they’ve got their mothers worried that’s for sure. I’ve heard this ain’t the first night they’ve spent outside the walls, neither, but two nights now? With all these goblins and kobolds and worse abroad? They’ll need a good spanking when they get back. Me Old Uncle wouldn’t stand for it, y’know. He’d have those boys in line, and no mistake.”

The Burial Site

The 25th day of Alturiak in the Year of the Sudden Journey.

The town was a hive of activity and hubbub yesterday with many a story told and retold at Rindall’s return. He was alone, without Gilmorril, and quite badly injured and exhausted, but his stubborn dwarven nature would not allow him to rest until after he had reported back to the Town Council about the path to the east.

Fortunately, I was party to the Town Council meeting to keep notes, so I have a first hand account from the paladin, and do not have to rely on the second-hand gossip, mainly from the barkeep Skillet, that is causing such a fuss around the town.

The Light of Pelor

The 18th day of Alturiak in the Year of the Sudden Journey.

It has been a tenday since Gilmorril and Rindall set out to the east and still there is no word of them. Although the weather has turned for the better, and fresh, clean breezes bring Spring in the air, we are worried for them, regardless of Gilmorril’s expertise in the wilderness.

There have been no further sightings of goblins, kobolds, or other unnatural beasts and life in the town has returned to normal. The mine to the north is starting to produce fine stone and ores, we are hewing timber from the woods, catching fish from the lake, trapping game in the woods, making cheeses and milk and preserving meat from our livestock, gathering wool and leather, and preparing the fields once more for this year’s crop of grain. We have everything we need to survive and yet I feel that without an influx of new blood soon, we may begin to stagnate.

Extended Rests in Armour

0

In our last scene within our 4E D&D game on Google Wave the player characters had to camp in the wilderness for the first time.  We’ve been playing on Wave for nearly nine months now, but for all of us this is still our first foray into 4th edition.

The group managed to find an abandoned hovel in a forest to settle down for the night, and set watch.  My intention as DM was always to have an encounter during the night – there were no random factors at play.  However, we wanted a modicum of realism in that the party needed to set an appropriate watch and get a good night’s rest for it to class as an Extended Rest to regain healing surges and powers.

Lay of the Land

The 10th day of Alturiak in the Year of the Sudden Journey.

Over a tenday has passed since the strange skeletal abominations were seen outside the town and we have still not managed to track where they have come from, or where they have gone. The snows have finally ceased and most has melted away, but still we struggle to find any conclusive tracks or signs of their passage.

Gilmorril’s best guess is that they have come from some marshland at the far end of the lake. He says he finds the marshes an eerie place, swirling with mists and ready to drag the unwary traveller down into icy pools of water. A pallor hangs over the place, sounds become muffled, and directions hard to fathom.

For now, we will just have to remain vigilant, and we have extra guards on duty patrolling around the palisades, even at night, to keep watch for any strange activity.

Deadwinter Day

From the Private Annals of the Church of Pelor.
Transcribed by Beltak, Scribe to His Radiant Servant, Tremak the Plush.
The 1st day of Alturiak in the Year of the Sudden Journey.

As the sun rose on the festival of Midwinter yesterday, or Deadwinter as many of the farmers call it, all thoughts of the traditional planning for the year ahead fell by the wayside. I myself would not have believed the stories that would have been told if I had not seen it with my own eyes.

Grundar Stonesthrow raised the first alarm, his eyes keener in the morning gloom than most. He admitted later he thought he was dreaming and nearly didn’t raise the alarm at all! Three or four other guards joined him up on the lookout tower at the east gate and looked out into the gorge beyond.

Standing there, still and silent, not even a furlong from the other side of the moat, were five skeletal figures, just staring at the town.

Clean Tankards

0

Overheard in The Bronze Lion Inn, as Skillet talks surreptitiously to a beleagured customer.
The 30th day of Hammer in the Year of the Sudden Journey.

“It’s like I said, y’know. They can talk about plans and initiatives as much as they like tomorrow, but the whole town is gettin’ a bit scared of these goblins, like. Now there’s these ‘kobolds’ to contend with as well, don’t y’know.”

Skillet paused for breath, and concentrated on cleaning a tankard with a grubby hand towel for a moment.

“I’ve got all these tankards to clean, an’ all the good plates and whatnot to sort out, jus’ so the Council can talk about their plans for the future. Well, I tells you, we ain’t got much future if we don’t sort them there goblins and kobolds out. Send Valino in with a few boys, I say, that’ll sort the little buggers out.”
