Wave Goodbye, Say Hello

3

Well I suppose it had to come. Google Wave is in the final stages of its death throes and by the end of the next month will completely disappear. Our Blackengorge adventure went through 21 months on this platform (we started in June 2010), evolving as we went, until we had something that we really enjoyed and found easy to use.

Unfortunately, we’ve had to change our plans somewhat, but with a great combined will to carry on we’ve moved to another platform, and continue the same style of gameplay.

The Earth-Fire Forge – Prentice Pieces

In the Smithy of Caldring the Elf
The evening of the 14th Day of Ches in the Year of the Sudden Journey.

Caldring slammed the door of her own smithy firmly shut behind her, striding over to her anvil. Her cheeks hot and flushed, she beat her fists down onto the smooth metal for a few moments until her anger had dissipated. The turn of events on this evening had turned her world upside down.

She was mostly angry with herself for acting so rashly and embarrasing herself in front of the Council and the new adventurers. She was also quite confused and doubting her own knowledge and feelings.

The 14th Day of Ches in the Year of the Sudden Journey.

Still the story of the Isle of the Mists continues, though whether I will be able to complete the tale tonight I do not know. The adventuurous pair, Khalin and Tradden, had found a chamber below the ruin of the Tower of the Mists, and had descended into the soot-laden area. However, a strange creature greeted them – one that didn’t appear to be too friendly!

The 14th Day of Ches in the Year of the Sudden Journey.

My candle still burns and I have time to continue my recording of the events on the Isle of the Mists. The adventurous pair, Khalin and Tradden, had managed to navigate their way to the isle in the centre of the lake through the mists and defended themselves against a pair of stirges that ambushed them upon their arrival. The pair then headed off towards the crumbling tower.

The 14th Day of Ches in the Year of the Sudden Journey.

After months of steady progress of the town, and the annals being recorded every tenday or so, I now find myself scribing every night by our ever decreasing number of candles and limited ink. The adventurers play their part in this flurry of activity, with barely an hour passing without incident that it is in our best interests to record. Only this morning two of the adventurers set out to the isle in the middle of the lake of mists and found something more than worthy of our records.

Yet again one of their number, Tradden, was keen to relay the tale to me, so that I could scribe.

One side effect of using Google Wave to run a D&D 4E game is that you get to ‘keep’ all of the dice rolls and results of those rolls over a long period. Our group have been through a number of encounters now, so there’s a fair amount of data within those blips and waves for those inclined to do a bit of mining.

With a little spare time on my hands, a couple of scripts and getting the crayons out, I was able to grab some of this data and have a little fun.

The 11th day of Ches in the Year of the Sudden Journey.

I am no bard, I am but a simple scribe, yet I feel I must write down and capture the deeds of the adventurers that have joined our thriving town for prosperity. In The Bronze Lion last night I managed to spend time with one of their company, Tradden, the warrior with the two swords, who told me of their tale of the mausoleum.

D&D 4E in Google Wave – Encounter’s End

In a previous post I discussed some of the mechanics and processes were are putting into our Google Wave game to help speed up some of the more mundane and often used aspects of the game while trying to keep the narrative and gameplay enjoyable.

In this post I describe what we are trying to do when an encounter had completed.

D&D 4E in Google Wave – Marching On Together!

0

On our Google Wave game our intrepid adventurers have descended into the depths of an old ruin in an attempt to find a missing elven scout. As they started to explore the rooms and chambers in the depths it became apparent that lots of rooms with lots of options of what to do led to a little confusion and a slowdown in the game.

Not all of the players are able to post continuously – we all have day jobs and some of us don’t have access to the Internet during the day. With time zones to contend with also (one of the players now lives in the US) we needed to work together to come up with ways to keep the game moving but with none of the interest, surprise, or choices being compromised too much.

Hopefully, we’re on the road to solving some of these issues, and the tips below may help you within your Wave games, or even within the realtime online environment or even the tabletop.

Visitors!

The 10th day of Ches in the Year of the Sudden Journey.

I write this in the late hours by candlelight in The Bronze Lion where much cheer and relief are mixed with so many other emotions. Not only have our two missing sons been returned to the town safe and well, but we have our first visitors to our town, as adventurers have made the crossing from The Islands to the Old Continent!

As always, as it seems with out little town, the cheer and joy is mixed with trepidation and sadness. It seems that the adventurers have had quite a tale to tell.
