Skill Challenge
Tradden Aversward

01

Putting his head down slightly Tradden concentrated on putting all his power into his legs, running like he never had done before!*

[Athletics Check: 1d20+12: 14] - failure!

The exertions of battle had made Tradden’s legs weary, though, and the young fighter found it hard to keep a good pace.

* In fact, he had run faster. The time he had been caught in the bed of Mrs Denelia Morrowbreeze by Mr Morrowbreeze the morning after Tradden’s stunning victory in the notorious Backhookey Road All-Entrants Freestyle Dance Competion

Zero Uhlit

Zero kept pace with Tradden, just behind the fighter’s shoulder.

‘Keep your eyes out for any traps the little bugger’s set!’ he huffed at his friend.

[Perception Check: 1d20+11+2: 22] - success!

There didn’t seem to be any more of the bear traps, not anything simple like caltrops. It was hard to tell what the orc was doing though, as it was far enough ahead to always be around a bend. He could still hear its booted feet slapping against the occasional cobble to know it wasn’t that far away.

Kireth Majere

03

Kireth followed behind, one hand holding his staff, the other trying to control his bag and numerous pouches from flying around. He was acutely aware of how ridiculous he must look and cursed Tradden’s name once more. Somehow, this was all the youth’s fault.

[Endurance Check: 1d20+5: 6] - critical failure!

A branch snapped into his face, not only leaving a nice red welt but also throwing the mage out of his laboured stride.

Skill Challenge
Khalin Grundokri

04

Khalin hurriedly pulled himself through the webbing. Kireth’s latest sly jibe rankled the dwarf. ‘I’ve got to stop that pompous oaf getting under my skin’, the warlord thought as his trailing leg hit the ground beyond and his gear fortunately failed to snag the ropes. With that he was away, arms pumping, legs pounding, and the excruciating pain that throbbed through his chest with every footfall mercifully dulled by adrenaline.

[Endurance Check: 1d20+15: 27] - success!

He was soon catching up with everyone, his stout frame strong despite the many wounds.

Skill Challenge
Tradden Aversward

05

Tradden’s body was flagging. His mind and spirit got together and decided now was not the time to give up, however, and he felt a surge of adrenalin rush through his veins.

At the same time he saw an opportunity. In the cobbled road ahead there was a slight bend. Thick undergrowth either side meant that one had to stay on the road, but on the best line round the corner there was one of the trademark, large holes in the road they had negotiated with the cart many times. Tradden adjudged the orc too small to likely have jumped it, the greenskin would have to have gone round. If Tradden could jump it, he could gain back valuable seconds…

[Athletics Check: 1d20+12: 23] - success!

The fighter leaped gracefully, gliding over the obstacle as if it were not there.

‘Ha… haaaa!’ he exclaimed, breathlessly, as he pounded after the orc!

Zero Uhlit

Tradden had started to edge ahead of the rogue, but Zero was concerned that the orc would have more traps prepared for them.

‘Slow down, Tradden,’ he puffed. ‘Watch your step!’

He scanned the trail ahead, seeing if he could spot anything that the young fighter might blunder into.

[Perception Check: 1d20+11+2: 16] - success!

The road appeared to be clear ahead, but the rogue was starting to feel the pace of the pursuit. Beads of sweat ran from his forehead and his breathing was becoming ragged.

Skill Challenge
Kireth Majere

07

It may have been wiser just to stop, leaving those of firmer frame to do the chasing but ‘giving up’ was not something the half-elf had ever been good at. That said, he had to change tactic.

He slowed slightly, eyes darting this way and that through the forest. ‘There!’ he said to himself, his elven eyes picking out what no one else could. Not an obvious route and it would surely only work if he moved undetected. It was a gamble, stealth was not his game either and if he failed at it he would surely be out of the chase but it was a calculated move and one he felt he must take.

Besides, he did have one advantage… his hand closed around the clasp of the shroud he wore and he allowed himself a brief smile.

[Gloaming Shroad]

[Kireth creates a zone of dim light (close burst 10)]

[Kireth gains +1 to Stealth Checks in dim light]

For a moment the forest around Kireth sank into a dim gloom and the mage tried to blend in to his surroundings.

[Stealth Check: 1d20+5+1: 15] - success!

The mage cut the corner through the trees, the dim light masking his movements well.

Skill Challenge
Khalin Grundokri

08

Khalin saw the branch whack into Kireth’s face before the mage fell into shadow and disappeared into the trees. The dwarf wasn’t the vindictive sort, but couldn’t help but suppress a smile. The mage was quite the gifted magic user, but sometimes the more mundane aspects of ‘a walk in the woods’ didn't come quite so smoothly to him. The warlord only hoped the whack wouldn’t slow his comrade down too much as he sprinted past the scowling half-elf’s last position — he was now gaining fast on Tradden.

[Khalin uses an Advantage]

[Endurance Check: 1d20+15: 33] - success!

[Advantage grants a success against Hard DC and Moderate DC]

‘You’re going to be beaten by a dwarf!’ he challenged the human playfully as he quickly made up the ground, passing the panting Zero with ease.

Skill Challenge
Tradden Aversward

09

‘Never!’ laughed Tradden, picking up the warlord’s positivity. It gave him the extra impetus to keep up the chase — they had kept good speed and even orcs couldnt run forever…

[Athletics Check: 1d20+12: 21] - success!

A final burst from the young fighter brought him around a bend as the slope finally bottomed out. The Old Road stretched away eastwards once more before him and in the distance was the orc.

It was too far away for even Zero to shoot and before Tradden could send out a call the thing veered off to its left into the trees and off the trail.

Tradden could sense something was afoot and held up his hands to slow the others. Khalin burst past, his legs pumping hard, but started to slow at Tradden’s signal. The pair exchanged glances and the young fighter pointed out where the orc had left the trail.

Zero caught up, his face rosy-cheeked and blowing hard. He had no time for knowing glances or spotting orcs, he simply put his hands on his knees and inhaled for all he was worth.

Kireth and Beltak came last, the mage surrounded in a deep shadow that gradually dissipated as he came to a stop, the scribe following him at a respectful distance.

‘Hmm,’ said Tradden, hands on hips whilst tugging on his short goatee in an unintentional imitation of Khalin. ‘When I found myself, erm, trying to escape pursuers back in the Rookery or The Mavens, I always used to head for somewhere I knew I could get away, or places I knew well and so would have the advantage.’

‘Aye,’ agreed Khalin. ‘Unlikely yon greenskin chose that particular spot in the forest to dive into the bushes for no reason. We should approach with caution…’

The groups’ eyes turned slowly in one direction, but had not quite reached it when said target decided to save them all the trouble.

‘All right!’ snapped Zero, ‘I know! Can we at least have a quick breather first? I think I have stones in my boots!’

Zero staggered forwards slowly trying to catch his breath as he advanced. He stayed close to the northern side of the trail near the close-packed trees, making sure that he wasn’t seen or heard.

[Stealth Check: 1d20+14: 29] - success!

He covered the ground quickly but surely and it wasn’t long before he spied the small path through the tree line that the orc had likely taken. He kept within the trees, the undergrowth snagging and tearing his new clothing almost past repair.

It was only a few yards before he could see the path opening out into a small clearing, a ramshackle building in the centre with a couple of larger trees for company.

[Perception Check: 1d20+11: 15] - success!

There was the orc, at the main door, furiously gesticulating to a taller, broader one and showing it the sack. The larger orc grunted and pointed at the door with a dull black flail and the orc archer slipped inside. Another orc, smaller than the one at the door, but bulkier than the archer came around the side of the building and spoke to the larger. They both nodded and pointed down the trail before the larger one barked out a couple of shouted orders, seemingly to no-one, and seemed to get ready himself.

The orc archer then appeared once more, looking slightly pale and without the sack. It had its bow ready, trained on the path.

With that, the rogue slipped silently back towards the Old Road and back to his companions to report.

The warlord started his march towards the orcs’ lair. Every now and then he gesticulated with Aecris.

‘Zero, Kireth, you two come in from the left flank, see if you can get a better angle from there. The rest of us,’ he paused to look at Tradden and Beltak, ‘well, let’s hit ‘em hard and fast.’

With that he turned onto the path and ushered Zero away to the left.

Zero nodded at Kireth and the pair veered off from the main path through the underbrush. They kept pace with the others until they could see the shack.

There were the three orcs still, outside the main door. Another two were running around from the left side of the shack and Kireth spotted some movement behind the large tree to the northeast.

‘Here they come!’ hollered Zero as he raised his crossbow.
