Combat
Zero Uhlit

01

Zero quickly sprang forwards as the orcs charged down the side of the shack. He loosed off a bolt at the lead runner…

[Gloaming Cut]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Savage #05: 1d20+9+2: 18] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+1+2: 5] plus [2d8: 11 sneak damage] and [Dead]

[Shift: N]

[Stealth Check: 1d20+14: 32] - success!

[Zero is hidden in the trees and gains Combat Advantage against all enemies]

It caught the orc in the throat and it went down immediately with a gurgled scream. Zero casually slipped forwards into the low-hanging branches of the tree and disappeared within their shadow.

Combat
Orc Archers

02

The archer on the porch switched his aim from the main group to Zero and Kireth and back again. It looked undecided as to which to aim for. When Zero slipped away it snarled and targeted the main group once more before letting fly with a flurry of arrows.

[Orc Archer #01: Clustered Volley]

[Area Burst 1 centred on Khalin] with [Damage: 1d10+6: 12]

[Burst Attack: 1d20+9: 10 vs Tradden’s AC (21+2)] - critical miss!

[Burst Attack: 1d20+9: 27 vs Khalin’s AC (22)] - hits!

[Damage: 12]

[Burst Attack: 1d20+9: 12 vs Beltak’s AC (19+2)] - misses!

As tightly packed as they were, one of the arrows had to hit one of the group. Khalin was the unlucky one, another arrow cutting across his arm.

SEP
23

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

03

Khalin wasted no more time and charged straight towards the triumvirate of enemies near the doorway, roaring his finest battle cry and swinging Aecris forcefully as he met the leading orc head on…

[Charge]

[Charge: N, N, N, N]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Savage #01: 1d20+10+1: 21] - hits!

[Damage: 1d10r2+7: 14] plus [1d8: 1 charge damage] and [Dead]

The craghammer cracked skull and ribs as the warlord unleashed a powerful blow, and the orc dropped to the floor in an instant.

SEP
24

Combat
Orc Terrorblade

04

From around the tree in the eastern part of the clearing charged a large orc, growling at the party with a wide blade above its head. It seemed to only have one target in mind, pounding its feet towards the entrance to the clearing.

[Move: W, W, W, W, SW, SW]

It scanned the pair at the entrance and elected the one holding two swords as the one to face its wrath.

[Charge]

[Charge: SW, SW, W, W, SW]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+9+1: 17 vs Tradden’s AC (21+2)] - misses!

It brought the great sword down in a huge sweep, but Tradden managed to dodge it with a nice side step.

SEP
24

Combat
Beltak Ancaron

05

Beltak looked across at Tradden and the advancing orc, but the young fighter seemed to be somehow enjoying himself and seemed more than capable. The flurry of arrows had been worrying Beltak more.

‘We need to take out that archer!’ he cried, almost surprising himself in his forthright manner.

With that he advanced, holding out his holy symbol before him.

[Move: NE, N, N]

The scribe positioned himself just behind Khalin before letting out a searing lance of radiant energy from his symbol, aimed squarely at the archer.

[Lance of Faith]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Archer #01’s Reflex: 1d20+8: 20] - hits!

[Damage: 1d8+5: 8]

[Khalin gains +2 to attack Orc Archer #01 until end of next turn]

The beam struck the orc and it recoiled, opening up a target for Khalin to exploit.

There was a cry from the east and northeast of the clearing, followed by howls and grunts in return. One by one a number of orcs charged towards the group, short but sharp hand axes held above their heads.

The first to appear was a lean orc, with great scars across its temples running down over its shoulders. It appeared from behind the tree and charged across towards the group.

[Orc Savage #02 Move: S, SW, SW, W, W, W]

[Orc Savage #02 Move: W, W, W, W, W, W]

The second was squatter, but bore similar scars. It charged with its mouth agape, showing rows of decaying splintered teeth, coming around the corner of the shack.

[Orc Savage #03 Move: SW, S, S, SW, S, SW]

[Orc Savage #03 Move: SW, W, W, W, W, W]

The last was also lean, and greyer than the others. It covered the ground quickly, though, bursting through the tree and catching up quickly.

Combat
Kireth Majere

07

Kireth nearly spat feathers when the dwarf charged in, had he paid no heed at all? But then, mid battle, the dwarf had turned his head for the briefest of moments and nodded at the mage, indicating he should strike. Kireth was impressed, perhaps Khalin did not quite appreciate what the implications might be here but it was a brave gesture nonetheless. Should he die, Kireth decided he would say something nice about him when they buried whatever remained.

Beltak had also unwisely, and against instruction, charged in. ‘Oh well,’ shrugged Kireth.

As the orc before Khalin fell and more enemies converged into the ‘killzone’, Khalin glanced back towards the mage, who gave a barely perceptible nod towards his comrades. It was enough of a signal for the warlord though, and Khalin raised his shield to cover Beltak and braced himself for the mighty blast of magic he knew was coming.

[Khalin: Flamedrinker Shield]

[Beltak gains Resist 10 to fire until end of next turn]

Reading from the Book of Undeniable Fire something once remembered by Kireth was forgotten and replaced by something new.

[Book of Undeniable Fire]

[Kireth swaps Acid Mire for Fireball]

Kireth raised his head slowly and beneath the dark folds of his hood his eyes blazed. The mage flashed a wicked smile and let loose.

[Fireball]

[Area Burst 3 centred on L6] with [Damage: 4d6+5: 21]

[Burst Attack vs Beltak’s Reflex: 1d20+9: 12] - misses!

[Half Damage: 10]

[Damage reduced to 0 due to Resist Fire 10]

[Burst Attack vs Khalin’s Reflex: 1d20+9: 10] - critical miss!

[Half Damage: 10]

[Damage reduced to 5 due to Resist Fire 5]

[Burst Attack vs Orc Rampager’s Reflex: 1d20+9: 22] - hits!

[Damage: 21]

[Burst Attack vs Orc Archer #01’s Reflex: 1d20+9: 25] - hits!

[Damage: 21] and [Dead]

[Burst Attack vs Orc Savage #02’s Reflex: 1d20+9: 12] - misses!

An orange ball of flame exploded next to Khalin, nearly knocking the dwarf off his feet. The warlord managed to protect Beltak as best he could as the flames spread out with a concussive force. Part of the building’s porch caught fire as the flames engulfed the orcs.

When the noise of the blast and the flames died down two of the orcs had fallen, their bodies turned a crisp black. The pair on the porch howled with pain as they patted small flames out on their jerkins. Khalin was singed, but not badly hurt, and Beltak had been spared any flames by the dwarf’s shield.

Kireth smiled.

SEP

Combat
Tradden Aversward

08

‘By Corellon!’ exclaimed Tradden, as he and the larger orc he was currently locking blades with both instinctively shied back from the fireball. The heat had only just dissipated by the time it reached him — had he been any closer he might have lost his eyebrows. That would have been a blow for good-lookingness in the old lands from which it may never have recovered.

Ignoring terrifying thoughts of facial hair loss, the fighter glanced across at Kireth. The mage was indeed growing more powerful.

A growl from the orc reminded him that not all the greenskins had died in the explosion and he moved immediately to try and better the tactical position.

[Pass Forward]

[Move: NE]

With that, he cleaved at the larger orc, hoping to catch it and its smaller friend before they had benefited from time to fully adjust after the fireball.

[Cleave]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Terrorblade: 1d20+12: 25] - hits!

[Damage: 1d8+7: 11] and [Marked]

[Orc Savage #02 takes 4 splash damage] and [Dead]

The orc, seemingly unprepared for an opponent which took such direct action, paid for it by having a large chunk taken out of its shoulder. It didn’t seem to notice, which was worrying. Less worrying was the smaller orc, who did notice having its throat slashed out, exhaling a last gurgling breath as it tumbled backwards.

SEP

Combat
Orc Rampager

09

The orc on the porch roared as it attempted to pat out the flames on its jerkin. It bounded forwards in fury, almost heedless of any consequences, as though it had been let out of a cage to vent its anger.

It moved towards Khalin, to his flank, winding the huge flail up in long arcs, and then brought it down against the dwarf and the scribe behind him.

[Rampage]

[Shift: S, S]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+11: 30 vs Khalin’s AC (22)] - hits!

[Damage: 2d6+6: 11] and [Bloodied]

[Shift: S]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+11: 21 vs Beltak’s AC (19)] - hits!

[Damage: 2d6+6: 13]

Both strikes hit hard, Khalin faring the worst as the metal flail smashed into the side of his head, nearly dislodging his helm and drawing a thin trickle of blood that dripped into his beard.

Combat
Orc Savages

10

Although many of their allies had been consumed in the mage’s flames, more of the orcs poured forwards from behind the shack. They were ragged things, scars and welts covering their bodies and temples, but looked aggressive, holding wicked hand axe aloft.

[Orc Savage #06 Move: S, S, S, S, S, S]

The first to advance came slowly down the western side of the shack, stepping over the fallen body of its comrade, the bolt in its neck still quivering. It looked about for the archer, but could not see him, and instead progressed warily towards the mage that had caused the conflgration.

[Orc Savage #06 Move: S, S, S]

It wasn’t looking for Zero any more, but as it approached Kireth it almost tumbled over the rogue and almost looked as startled as Zero himself.

From behind the shack to the east two more of the beasts appeared, perhaps braver than the others considering they had not witnessed Kireth’s power. With axes aloft they picked targets and charged straight at them.

[Orc Savage #07 Move: S, S, S, SW, SW, SW]

[Orc Savage #07: Charge - Handaxe]

[Charge: W, W, W, W, W, W]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+9+1: 24 vs Beltak’s AC (19)] - hits!

[Damage: 12] and [Bloodied]

The first of the new pair slammed into Beltak, knocking the wind out of him.

[Orc Savage #08 Move: S, S, S, S, SW, SW]

[Orc Savage #08: Charge - Handaxe]

[Charge: SW, SW, W, W, W]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+9+1: 14 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - misses!

The second attempted the same with the young fighter, but Tradden just blocked the clumsy swipe with his shortsword.

SEP

Combat
Orc Alchemist

11

A further creature appeared behind the tree, another orc, laden with vials and pouches upon a leather belt.

[Move: S, S, S, S, S, S]

[Move: S, S, SW, SW, W, W]

This one seemed to be positioning itself, weighing up the opponents, and getting ready to strike.

SEP
25

Combat
Zero Uhlit

12

Zero breathlessly took aim at the orc, far too close to him for comfort, and fired. If he missed, he knew a crude blade would be flying at his vulnerable body.

[Ranged Basic Attack - Hand Crossbow]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Savage #06: 1d20+9: 12] - misses!

The shot was wild as Zero panicked and the rogue left himself open to the counter. The orc didn’t hesitate to take up on the offer.

[Orc Savage #06: Melee Basic Attack - Handaxe]

[Opportunity Attack: 1d20+9: 15 vs Zero’s AC (19)] - misses!

The orc was over-eager and the swing caught on a low limb of the tree, chopping off the branch which landed squarely on the rogue’s foot.

SEP
26

Combat
Orc Archers

13

The archer on the porch looked singed and burnt from the aftermath of Kireth’s flames and in poor shape. Its longbow seemed relatively unharmed, however, and it raised it once more towards the small group of Khalin and Beltak. It had seen its comrade fell the dwarf once and it aimed carefully to try to fell him again.

[Orc Archer #01: Clustered Volley]

[Area Burst 1 centred on Khalin] with [Damage: 1d10+6: 7]

[Burst Attack: 1d20+9: 18 vs Khalin’s AC (22)] - misses!

[Burst Attack: 1d20+9: 23 vs Beltak’s AC (19)] - hits!

[Damage: 7]

The flurry of arrows thudded into Khalin’s shield, but one got through, slamming into Beltak’s thigh.

SEP
26

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

14

Khalin grinned as the flames dissipated almost as quickly as they’d appeared, and two orcs lay charred and lifeless, the others rattled, and he and Beltak barely singed.

‘Hah! Look Beltak, more greenies to smite — they don’t know when to give in!’ he exclaimed with a battle-fueled glee that lifted his comrade and brought vigour quickly back to the warlord’s limbs.

[Inspiring Word]

[Beltak spends a Healing Surge and regains 2d6+11: 18 hit points]

[Beltak is no longer Bloodied]

[Last Legion Officer: Beltak may shift 1 square]

The scribe almost seemed to grin as he shuffled away from the orc wielding the handaxe.

[Beltak Shift: W]

Khalin drew back a large breath to compose himself.

[Dwarven Resilience]

[Khalin spends a Healing Surge and regains 12 hit points]

[Khalin gains +2 to defences until start of next turn]

[Khalin is no longer Bloodied]

With that the dwarf swung mightily at the ravager before him, hoping to remove another enemy from the skirmish…

[Warlord’s Strike]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Rampager: 1d20+10: 23] - hits!

[Damage: 2d10r2+7: 18]

[Allies gain +2 to damage against Orc Rampager until end of next turn]

The hammer slammed into the side of the orc, but it barely seemed troubled.

SEP
26

Combat
Orc Terrorblade

15

The orc with the broad blade seemed infuriated by Tradden’s contempt for it, spinning his blade in a mockery of the young fighter’s style before swinging it around in an arc to try to slice the boy in two.

[Melee Basic Attack - Falchion]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+9: 22 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - hits!

[Damage: 3d4+6: 14]

Tradden tried to avoid the swing but the blade was too fast.

SEP
26

Combat
Beltak Ancaron

16

Beltak seemed to perk up at Khalin’s words and swiftly moved around to flank the orc between them.

[Shift: NW]

With the orc between himself and Khalin, Beltak paused for a moment.

‘We need to get rid of this, uh, thing, Khalin and stop that archer!’ the scribe shouted across to the dwarf. ‘We’re sitting ducks!’

But the large orc still seemed fresh before them and may have to fall before then. Beltak uttered a few words to Pelor before striking out with his mace.

[Healing Strike]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Rampager: 1d20+6+2: 28] - critical hit!

[Damage: 2d8+1+2: 19] and [Bloodied] and [Marked]

[Khalin spends a Healing Surge and regains 12+4: 16 hit points]

Beltak looked back over at Tradden — the youth was being sorely pressed by the orc with the large blade. With another swift prayer to Pelor a radiant light spilled upon the young fighter, renewing his strength.

[Healing Word]

[Tradden spends a Healing Surge and regains 2d6+14+4: 25 hit points]

SEP
30

Combat
Kireth Majere

17

Kireth whirled to his right side. Assisting Tradden was the smart move right now, not just because the boy might need it but also because the quicker Tradden was freed up from his current combat the quicker he could be directed in against others.

Not damaging the youth was key to this, so Kireth wove one of his more ‘selective’ spells.

[Force Orb]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Terrorblade’s Reflex: 1d20+9: 26] - hits!

[Damage: 2d8+5: 9]

[Secondary Attack vs Orc Savage #08’s Reflex: 1d20+9: 27] - hits!

[Damage: 1d10+5: 10] and [Dead]

The ball of force shot unerringly towards the larger of the two orcs by Tradden’s side and burst against its chest sending slivers of force energy out past it. The orc didn’t seem to notice much in its rage and bloodlust, but the smaller one behind it took the strands of energy full in the face and went down in a bloody howl.

OCT
01

Combat
Tradden Aversward

18

The battle was hotting up for sure. Tradden didn’t even have time to turn and acknowledge his thanks to Kireth when the two orcs in front of him started sparking up with magics. The larger one howled in anger but stood firm. The smaller one crumpled to the floor, and for that Tradden was grateful to the mage — it meant he could operate with a bit more freedom.

Tradden was starting to understood how orcs fought — they were usually all about directness and brute strength and this one appeared to be no exception. With that in mind Tradden feinted as if to fall back and open himself up to a large hit from the orc. The greenskin obliged, changing the way it stood to plant its legs on the floor in a wide stance, allowing it to hold its weapons up high and deliver a crushing blow onto the human from above.

That was all Tradden needed, and with a short push off he slid, legs first, underneath its despairing blow.

[Pass Forward]

[Move: E]

The fighter was quickly on his feet, slicing down at is exposed face with a trademark ‘Ha, ha!’

[Villain’s Menace]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Terrorblade: 1d20+12: 15] - misses!

[Marked]

[Tradden gains +1 to attack and +2 to damage Orc Terrorblade until end of encounter]

The orc was a wily campaigner however, and leant back, causing Tradden to miss wildly. It grunted in a mock Ha, ha! and advanced on the young human.

Holding his blades up ready to block the blows that were heading his way any second, Tradden also remembered that there was another orc somewhere behind him.

‘Ah…’

OCT
01

Combat
Orc Rampager

19

The orc by the porch, bloodied and battered from Khalin’s hammer and Beltak’s mace went into a wild fury. It thrashed out with its flail regardless of the taunts and challenges of the young scribe.

[Rampage]

[Orc Rampager may shift up to 3 squares and use Heavy Flail against up to three opponents]

It lashed out at Beltak without a thought…

[Rampage - Heavy Flail]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+11: 16 vs Beltak’s AC (19)] - misses!

…but the young scribe managed to duck behind his small shield, deflecting the blow. The orc continued its swing, coming around to face Khalin and the flail followed its movement.

[Rampage - Heavy Flail]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+11-2: 19 vs Khalin’s AC (22+2)] - misses!

The dwarf was wise to the move, however, and his shield was up well before the weapon made contact.

Before Khalin could prevent it moving off, though, the orc staggered away, its fury taking it across the field of combat towards the hapless Tradden.

[Orc Rampager Shift: SE, SE, E]

The move caught the young fighter by surprise, already beset by one huge orc and another not far behind his back. The flail came around swiftly on his unprotected flank.

[Rampage: Heavy Flail]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+11-2: 13 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - misses!

The orc barely seemed to register that it had missed all its targets, simply thrashing from side to side with snarls and grunts.

OCT
01

Combat
Orc Savages

20

The remaining savages seemed undeterred by the fact their comrades lay blackened and burnt or cut to shreds by ribbons of force. They continued to swing their sharp axes as if their lives depended upon it.

One kept stalking Zero as the rogue tried to hide behind branches of the tree. It swung its handaxe two or three times, only finding stout branches in its way as it circled the dodging rogue.

[Orc Savage #06: Melee Basic Attack - Handaxe]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+9: 28 vs Zero’s AC (19)] - hits!

[Damage: 8]

Finally one of the swipes got through, cutting across Zero’s shoulder and leaving a nasty bruise.

The other savage continued to harass Khalin, seizing the opportunity whilst the dwarf concentrated on the rampaging bruiser.

[Orc Savage #07: Melee Basic Attack - Handaxe]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+9: 10 vs Khalin’s AC (22+2)] - critical miss!

Khalin was becoming more and more comfortable with combat with every encounter, however, and he dodged the lunge without barely a thought.

OCT

Combat
Orc Alchemist

21

Only one of the orcs did not appear to be effectively engaged in the melee. Off to the east, near the large tree, stood an orc with a leather belt stuffed with vials. It cautiously approached the main bulk of the melee, trying to gauge where its efforts would best be placed.

[Move: W, NW, W, NW, W, W]

It plucked two of the vials from its belt, one a white opaque liquid, the other a startling green.

Quickly it threw the pair, the first landing between Khalin and Beltak, the other straight at Tradden.

[Alchemical Barrage]

[Orc Alchemist makes two attacks]

[Caustic Glue]

[Area Burst 1 centred on L4] with [Damage: 1d4+2: 4]

[Burst Attack: 1d20+11: 13 vs Khalin’s Reflex (15+2)] - misses!

[Burst Attack: 1d20+11: 20 vs Beltak’s Reflex (16)] - hits!

[Damage: 4] and [Slowed]

[Acid Jar]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+11: 31 vs Tradden’s Reflex (20)] - critical hit!

[Damage: 1d10+4: 14]

[Orc Rampager takes 2 splash damage]

[Orc Terrorblade takes 2 splash damage]

The first vial splashed over Beltak and he was instanly covered in a hissing and spitting viscous glue. The second covered Tradden, stinging his skin and seeping into his eyes. Splashes covered the orc’s allies, though, but were not as painful as the covering that the young fighter received.

OCT
01

Combat
Zero Uhlit

22

Zero really was panicking now. He darted under a number of branches with the orc in quick pursuit, its handaxe poised for the kill. In desperation he fired his crossbow once more.

[Sly Flourish]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Savage #06: 1d20+9: 24] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+6: 12] and [Dead]

More through luck than judgement the bolt lodged itself through the savage’s wrist, pinning it to a branch. The thing squirmed for a few moments, blood spurting from its artery, a scream of torture and agony from its crooked mouth. It didn’t take long for blood loss to sap its strength and it sagged, its knees buckling, but the bolt still pinning it it upright in mockery of its life.

[Orc Archer #01: Ranged Basic Attack - Longbow]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+11: 22 vs Beltak’s AC (19)] - hits!

[Damage: 1d10+6: 8] and [Push: SW] and [Bloodied]

The arrow thudded into Beltak’s shoulder and the scribe staggered back towards Zero.

OCT
03

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

24

Khalin used the momentum from his dodge to slide away from his opponent…

[Shift: SW]

…and made a beeline for the brutes surrounding Tradden. The ugly blade-wielding greenie Tradden faced looked suitably distracted by the lad’s whirling blades, and the dwarf charged headlong into it, Aecris pinwheeling once more…

[Charge]

[Charge: S, SE, SE]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Terrorblade: 1d20+10+1: 17] - misses!

The orc wasn’t that distracted that it didn’t manage to get its blade up in time. With a resounding clang Aecris bounced off the huge falchion and the orc changed its stance to meet the new opponent.

OCT
04

Combat
Orc Terrorblade

25

With a new victim next to it the orc was spoilt for choice. Here was a dwarf, a loathsome creature, similar to vermin. The orc would love to sink its blade deep into the thing’s chest. Its puny attack had barely distracted its stance, but it would continue to harass the human with the twin blades that would just not shut up.

It swung its blade around, aiming for Tradden’s sword arm.

[Melee Basic Attack - Falchion]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+9: 17 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - misses!

But the young fighter was too quick for the clumsy swipe of the blade and easily dodged backwards and out of the way.

26

Beltak had been knocked backwards by the arrow and knew that the archer posed a significant threat, particularly if it was allowed to keep volley after volley of arrows flying into the throng. He decided to put an end to its miserable existence.

With the glue holding him in position, he couldn’t move very far, so he drew his holy symbol and prayed for Pelor’s guidance.

[Sacred Flame]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Archer #01’s Reflex: 1d20+8: 27] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+5: 9]

[Tradden gains 5 temporary hit points]

Radiant light seared out from the symbol and washed over the orc, causing it to cry out in pain. Another light swiftly darted towards Tradden, filling him with energy and resolve.

[Saving Throw vs Slowed: 1d20+1: 12] - success!

With another effort Beltak managed to pull himself free of the glue.

Kireth Majere

27

Kireth weaved his staff this way and that with practised ease. It was an art form to him and a deadly one at that to those that found themselves on the end of it. The spinning staff came to an abrupt halt, pointing in the direction of Tradden’s attackers.

There was a moment’s pause before Kireth whispered, ‘Boom!’

[Shock Sphere]

[Area Burst 2 centred on L7] with [Damage: 2d6+5: 17]

[Burst Attack vs Orc Savage #07’s Reflex: 1d20+9: 10] - critical miss!

[Burst Attack vs Orc Alchemist’s Reflex: 1d20+9: 15] - misses!

[Half Damage: 8]

[Burst Attack vs Orc Rampager’s Reflex: 1d20+9: 16] - misses!

[Half Damage: 8]

The sphere of energy crackled with life and burst just above the ground with a blast of magic that showed the mage’s power was increasing. It was power and energy at the expense of speed though, and the blast that spread out was countered by those caught in its radius although they still took a thumping blow.

Combat
Tradden Aversward

28

With concussive shock from the wizard’s magic and the previous assaults from the twin-bladed fighter the rampager’s activity grew to a crescendo. It whirled about thrashing its flail from side to side.

[Orc Rampager: Berserk Flailing]

[Tradden takes 5 damage]

Tradden took a moment to survey the battle. Things were looking a lot better — the numbers were in their favour and a few of the orcs were looking worse for wear. If they could finish the injured off the others would fall shortly after.

It was the kind of cold-hearted thinking that would have shocked the Tradden who lived in a modest apartment in one of the more fashionable areas of Deepingwald. For the Tradden who spent most of his time being attacked by strange creatures on a lost continent it was simply a sensible state of mind.

Moving quickly the fighter whirled his longsword around his head in an elaborate figure of eight shape, forcing the two nearest orcs to dodge back away from it. Before either had chance to react he leapt at the orc that had just charged in, favouring trying to finish it off ahead of the orc he had previously been battling. He chopped in at its suddenly exposed stomach!

[Sweeping Slash]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Rampager’s Reflex: 1d20+12: 19] - hits!

[Cannot Push] and [Marked]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Terrorblade’s Reflex: 1d20+12+1: 18] - hits!

[Push: SW] and [Marked]

[Secondary Attack vs Orc Rampager: 1d20+11: 30] - hits!

[Damage: 2d6+7: 10]

The blow hit home, causing a large wound to open in its abdomen, but the greenskin didn’t fall as he had hoped. He at least he had their attention now!

[Pass Forward]

[Move: W, W]

Realising his antics had split the enemy somewhat, Tradden moved to try and better the tactical advantage, finding a spot where he could fight back-to-back with the ever reliable Khalin.

Combat
Orc Rampager

29

The rampaging orc appeared to take no heed of Tradden’s threats or stance against it. Blinded with rage it struck out where it could.

[Rampage]

[Orc Rampager may shift up to 3 squares and use Heavy Flail against up to three opponents]

It was so close to Tradden that it could barely miss…

[Rampage - Heavy Flail]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+11: 15 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - misses!

…but Tradden blocked the clumsy attack between his two swords. The orc then made the move to spin away and disengage with the young fighter. Tradden wasn’t having any of that, however, and he lunged after the beast, trying to stop it from going anywhere.

[Tradden: Combat Challenge]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Rampager: 1d20+12: 29] - hits!

[Damage: 1d8+7: 12] and [Dead]

The fighter’s sword caught the thing as it lurched away, cutting deep into its neck. With a gurgle and a last thrash it fell to the ground.

[Savage Demise]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+11: 28 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - hits!

[Damage: 2d6+6: 9]

Tradden wasn’t expecting the orc to lash out as it fell and the head of the flail caught him squarely on the chest.

Combat
Orc Savages

30

The last of the handaxe-wielding orcs finally put its arms down from its face after the shock of the wizard’s spell. It had not been buffeted as bad as the others but was enraged by the strike. It looked across at Kireth and charged at the mage with its axe held high.

[Orc Savage #07: Charge]

[Charge: W, SW, SW, SW]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+9: 10 vs Kireth’s AC (18)] - critical miss!

The orc tripped over the broken cartwheel just before Kireth, though, and the strike went wide by some distance.

Combat
Orc Alchemist

31

The orc stood off to one side continued to search its belt for futher bottles and vials to launch at the party.

[Alchemical Barrage]

[Recharge: 1d6: 3] - failure!

The orc seemed to fumble as it retrieved vials from its belt and only came up with one in its crooked hand. A white one with a viscous looking liquid.

With studious intent it propelled it towards Tradden.

[Caustic Glue]

[Area Burst 1 centred on O7] with [Damage: 1d4+2: 6]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+11: 20 vs Tradden’s Reflex (20)] - hits!

[Damage: 6] and [Slowed (Save Ends)] and [Bloodied]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+11: 18 vs Khalin’s Reflex (15)] - hits!

[Damage: 6] and [Slowed (Save Ends)]

The sticky substance covered the man and dwarf but barely splashed any others. For a moment there was only the briefest sting as whatever acid lay at toe concoction’s base ate into their skin, then it began to harden and movement became difficult.

Combat
Zero Uhlit

32

Zero quickly backpeddled away from the charging orc, banging into the orc he’d pinned against the tree. Its vacant eyes stared at him with loathing and the rogue almost lost his cool. He shrank back into the darkness and and cover of the bush.

[Fleeting Ghost]

[Move: N]

[Stealth Check: 1d20+14: 34] - critical success!

[Zero is hidden from all enemies]

Trying to get the orc’s unblinking eyes out of his mind he concentrated on the orc that was attacking Kireth and aimed for its back.

[Gloaming Cut]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Savage #07: 1d20+9+2: 29] - hits!

[Shift: S]

[Stealth Check: 1d20+14: 30] - success!

[Zero is hidden from all enemies]

In one moment Kireth was readying himself for the orc’s onslaught until it tripped over the broken wagon wheel by the mage’s feet. The orc almost fell on the mage.

The next moment the orc was coughking up blood in the mage’s face, a single quivering bolt point sticking out of the thing’s chest, piercing its black heart.

Kireth casually side stepped to let the orc fall to the floor at his feet, ignoring its plight now it was no longer a threat.

Combat
Orc Archers

33

The archer on the doorstep looked weary, both from its escape from the ambush and sprint down the hill to this ramshackle building and from the many cuts and abrasions it wore. With a limp it slowly moved towards the door, keeping its bow trained on the man and dwarf in the centre of the path.

[Move: W, W, W]

It still had strength to draw its bow, however, and fired quickly, one arrow after the other.

[Orc Archer #01: Clustered Volley]

[Area Burst 1 centred on Tradden] with [Damage: 1d10+6: 14]

[Damage: 14]

[Burst Attack: 1d20+9: 10 vs Khalin’s AC (22)] - critical miss!

A number of arrows landed, many bouncing off Khalin’s raised shield, but one got through and punctured Tradden’s thigh.

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

34

The enemies were thinning, but that pesky bottle-throwing greenie was becoming a pain in the posterior and no mistake. Khalin made to move towards it, but the cloying concoction clung closely and kept him cumbersome and clumsy.

Raising his craghammer he cried, ‘C’mere you cowardly c…’

‘Careful with the cursing!’ called his comrade. Even in the chaos of conflict Tradden’s civilised sensibilities demanded a degree of decorum.

‘…cretin!’ finished the dwarf, cocking an eyebrow curiously.

But the lighthearted interjection raised Tradden’s spirits a little at least.

[Inspiring Word]

[Tradden spends a Healing Surge and regains 2d6+12: 18 hit points]

[Tradden is no longer Bloodied]

[Last Legion Officer: Tradden gains +2 to AC and Reflex until the start of his next turn]

Khalin wanted to advance on the alchemist, but the large orc beside him was likely to take umbrage with that, and would need dealing with first.

[Shielded Assault]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Terrorblade: 1d20+10: 18] - hits!

[Damage: 2d10r2+7: 20]

[+2 AC to self and adjacent allies until end of next turn]

The swing connected and Khalin felt a reassuring crack.

[Saving Throw vs Slowed: 1d20: 14] - success!

As the dwarf put his energy into the warhammer’s swing he broke free of the sticky goo thrown by the vial-wielding orc.

Combat
Orc Terrorblade

The orc didn’t appear to take too kindly to Khalin’s attack and whirled upon the dwarf regardless of Tradden’s taunts.

It brought its blade to bear and swatted at the warlord with a roar.

[Melee Basic Attack - Falchion]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+9-2: 24 vs Khalin’s AC (22+2)] - hits!

[Damage: 3d4+6: 16]

The heavy blade cut deeply across Khalin’s weapon-arm and the orc swiftly moved to the side of the dwarf, trying to open him up.

[Shift: NW]

Tradden was itching to strike out at the orc but it had moved before he could get close enough to swing his blade.

OCT

Combat
Beltak Ancaron

36

The young scribe was hurt but he did not let that dent his pride. He was concerned about the archer and he needed to finish the filthy beast off.

With a muttered prayer to Pelor webs of gleaming strands cascaded down from the sky upon the orc archer.

[Sacred Flame]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Archer #01’s Reflex: 1d20+8: 19] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+5: 10] and [Dead]

[Tradden gains 5 temporary hit points]

The radiant energy washed over the orc, burning its skin and finally putting an end to the creature’s life.

At the same time the webbing coalesced over Tradden and the young fighter felt renewed.

Combat
Kireth Majere

37

Presumably Khalin and Tradden had their opponent under control. Kireth shot the pair a quick glance, hmm, ‘presumably’.

He would turn his attention to the other that had separated himself. Torn between finishing the fight quickly and saving something in reserve should there be others in quick succession, the mage selected a spell from his growing collection that would hopefully both injure and control the foe.

[Shadow Claws]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Alchemist’s Fortitude: 1d20+5: 14] - misses!

[If Orc Alchemist moves during next turn it takes damage]

Wisps of shadow started to form around the orc’s feet and ankles, but they were faint and thin. The orc grinned with a crooked set of teeth at the mage’s impotence.

OCT

Combat
Tradden Aversward

38

There were two orcs left. On the death of the last one Tradden had started to taunt the more muscular of the remaining greenskins, trying to keep it goaded and aimed in his direction. He started to circle around it slowly (his choices being limited in any event by the strange glue-like substance currently covering him), sneakily flanking it without knowing.

[Pass Forward]

[Move: W, SW]

He heard the now-familiar words of magic start to flow from behind him.

‘That’s it!’ he mocked, keeping his eyes on the orc. ‘You’re for it now!’

He waited.

‘Any second now…’

More time elapsed.

‘Our mage is supremely powerful!’

Nothing.

‘Any… time… now…’

He risked a look back at Kireth, saw the look on the wizard’s face, and thought better of saying any more.

‘Oh, by Correlon…’ he muttered to himself, deciding to take things into his own hands.

[Surprising Stab]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Terrorblade’s Reflex: 1d20+12+2+1: 30] - hits!

[Damage: 4] and [Grants Combat Advantage] and [Marked] and [Bloodied]

[Secondary Attack vs Orc Terrorblade: 1d20+11+1+2: 32] - hits!

[Damage: 2d6+7+2: 12]

[Frost Longsword]

[Orc Terrorblade takes 1d8+2: 3 cold damage]

It was a solid, if not spectacular one-two. If they could take this one down quickly, they may still be able to take down the other one before it chucked anymore of those annoying vials! This one was proving a real bother!

[Saving Throw vs Slowed: 1d20+1: 2] - critical failure!

Tradden tried to break free of the glue slowly hardening around his ankles but to no avail.

OCT

Combat
Orc Alchemist

39

The orc with the vials looked unconcerned with the curling shadows around his feet, barely noticing their chill.

[Alchemical Barrage]

[Recharge: 1d6: 1] - failure!

It still couldn’t get the vials from its belt, though, and decided to head towards the potential safety of the porch and the door to the shack.

[Shadow Claws]

[Orc Alchemist takes 2+4: 6 cold damage]

As it began to move the wisps of shadow started to writhe and form into the heads of vicious beasts, snapping and biting at the orc’s ankles until it finally broke free.

[Move: W, NW, W, NW, NW, NW]

At the saftey of the porch it turned and lobbed a single vial at Beltak.

[Acid Jar]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+11: 22 vs Beltak’s Reflex (16)] - hits!

[Damage: 1d10+4: 11]

[Zero takes 2 splash damage]

The vial cracked as it hit Beltak, spraying the scribe with a stinging liquid, some of it spraying onto the hapless Zero hiding in the bushes behind.

[Shift: N]

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

41

Tradden’s crafty manoeuvering still had the large orc wedged between the two heroes. The enemy may be thinning, but Beltak for one was looking very much the worse for wear. This fight needed to be finished soon, before the scribe’s brave efforts brought him to some early end.

The warlord shrugged inside his armour, willing the magics inside it to take effect, and sure enough he felt a surge of renewal…

[Dwarven Scale Mail]

[Khalin regains 12 hit points]

With that he swung Aecris at the orc smartly, whipping the hammer’s head round with a surprising economy of movement, hoping to make it retaliate and perhaps provide an opening to let his friend finish the brute off…

[Brash Assault]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Terroblade: 1d20+10+2: 19] - hits!

[Damage: 1d10r2+7: 11]

[Target can make free attack with Combat Advantage, if does then ally can make attack with Combat Advantage]

The orc whirled upon the dwarf, anger and fire in its eyes, swinging its heavy blade down onto the warlord.

[Orc Terrorblade: Melee Basic Attack - Falchion]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+9+2-2: 25 vs Khalin’s AC (22)] - hits!

[Damage: 3d4+6: 13]

The orc landed a crashing blow against the dwarf, clattering off Khalin’s shield and onto the top of his arm. The warlord grimaced at the pain and shot a look at Tradden.

Tradden, who knew Khalin was a past-master at creating openings for his comrades during a fight, had been waiting for this chance and did not hesitate.

[Tradden: Melee Basic Attack - Frost Lomgsword]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Terrorblade: 1d20+12+2+1: 23] - hits!

[Damage: 1d8+7+2: 16] and [Dead]

Tradden cut across the greenskin’s back and for a moment the young fighter thought the strike wasn’t enough. But then, with a stagger to its left, it fell face down in the dirt.

With purpose, Khalin strode forwards towards the final orc.

Beltak winced at the pain from the stinging liquid and took a moment to utter a short prayer to Pelor.

[Healing Word]

[Beltak spends a Healing Surge and regains 2d6+11+4: 26 hit points]

[Beltak is no longer Bloodied]

With renewed hope he ran towards the remaining orc with his mace raised in the air. The scribe was not a warrior, but none could doubt his courage in trying to stop the thing fleeing through the door.

[Move: N, N, N]

With a cry to Pelor he crashed into the orc, swinging his mace with all his might, a divine glow coming from the weapon as it struck.

[Damage: 2d8+1: 17] and [Marked]

[Khalin spends a Healing Surge and regains 12+4: 16 hit points]

The strike caught the orc by surprise and it howled in pain. Khalin took heart from the scribe’s actions and basked in the glow of the radiance of the strike.

Kireth Majere

43

There may have been only one foe left now but Kireth was learning fast enough that it paid to put safety, his safety, first. Moving forward he came to stand just behind Zero.

[Move: N, N]

The thief, sensing his presence cast a quick glance behind. ‘Hello,’ said Kireth cheerily. This odd pleasantry seemed to unnerve Zero more than any of Kireth’s stares ever had, the thief nearly fumbling his crossbow in shock.

Seemingly unaware of this, Kireth refocused on the remaining orc. ‘I wonder if he’ll flee or surrender?’ said the mage in genuine curiosity.

‘What?’ said a now very confused thief.

‘Well, I’ve never credited them with much intelligence but surely even this creature has enough wit to know the game is up.’ Kireth cocked his head to one side considering the creature. ‘Oh, well.’

[Magic Missile]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Alchemist] - automatic hit!

[Damage: 2+4+1: 7]

The force bolt hit the orc squarely in the chest and it roared out with pain. It was surrounded out here, all of its allies gone, but it was still too stubborn, or stupid, to give in.

Tradden Aversward

With the large-bladed orc dying at his feet Tradden quickly spun to face the final foe. The spin, however, was restricted by the sticky substance holding his feet fast and he nearly tripped where he stood. Tightening his muscles he attempted to break free.

[Ignore Weakness]

[Saving Throw vs Slowed: 1d20+6: 24] - success!

Clear of the glue he wiped his blades on the soiled jerkin of the terrorblade and began a slow march towards the alchemist.

[Move: NE, N, N, N, NE]

He came around in an arc, speed building until he was running, charging into the face of the orc.

[Charge: NW, NW]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Alchemist: 1d20+12+1: 22] - hits!

The young fighter slashed downwards as he buffeted into the creature, opening a large cut across its flank.

Orc Alchemist

45

The alchemist reeled from Tradden’s attack. It was outnumbered by far, allies strewn around the battlefield, but it might just yet survive.

[Alchemical Barrage]

[Recharge: 1d6: 4] - failure!

Being pressed on its flanks it couldn’t get hold of all of the vials it wanted, but at least it got one it would need, throwing the small glass bulb down hard onto the floor.

[Stink Bomb]

[Close Blast 3 top-left at XX]

[Creatures within zone take -2 penalty to attack rolls and defences]

A thin cloud of strange brown gas flooded the immediate area around the orc with a smell that was overbearing. A mixture of foul excrement and rotting flesh made Beltak and Tradden gag and even Khalin was affected somewhat. Fortunately for Zero and Kireth they were too far away for the smell to overpower them, but even they could sniff its putrescence.

The orc seemed a little affected too, but masked his distaste by drawing out a large gnarled club from its belt and started to swing it from side to side.

Zero glanced again at the lifeless orc. The glassy eyes were really starting to creep him out. Fortunately, the only enemy remaining was the alchemist and it was doubtful he’d last much longer.

He fired off a bolt to speed things along.

[Sly Flourish]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Alchemist: 1d20+9+2: 25] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+6: 8] plus [2d8: 13 sneak damage]

The bolt sped forwards from the gloom of the branches and thudded into the orc’s thigh.

Then, with a polite smile and salute, he bid farewell to his departed friend and emerged from the bushes, brushing himself off diligently.

Khalin Grundokri

47

Khalin hefted his hammer once more. The craftsman in him was starting to feel like this was a particularly tedious job that had been going on a little too long, and now needed a workmanlike finish. With the final orc beset with enemies he started to stride round behind Zero and Beltak, but he picked up speed as he spoke…

‘Have you farted, greenie? By Moradin’s beard, I hope you don’t let rip like that in one o’ those goblin caves!’

The words were light, but his demeanour was all business. Sure enough, Aecris started to wheel round as he turned on the enemy — the hapless orc trapped between himself and Tradden — and ignoring the stench he put his full weight into what he hoped would be the final act of the battle…

[Charge]

[Charge: N, N]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Alchemist: 1d20+10+1-2: 22] - hits!

[Damage: 1d10r2+7: 15] plus [1d8: 2 charge damage] and [Dead]

Just as Tradden raised an arm to suggest icapacitating the orc rather than outright killing it the dwarf’s blow cracked the orc’s skull, knocking the lifeless corpse backwards and splintering through the shack’s door.

It was a violent end to a bloody battle, the sound of splintering wood and a grunt of satisfaction from the warlord the last sound. The remains of the door swung backwards and forwards on their hinges with a dark, stale space behind it seemingly the only reward.
