The Mouth of the Sleeper
Hanged Ones

…continues from Book #01, Chapter #10, Scene #09

Synopsis

1st Day of Tarsakh in the Year of the Sudden Journey
Battling at the summit of the white face adorned hill in the Coilwood, the heroes manage to overcome a force of orcs and the reappearance of strange black creatures. Exploring the domed chambers within they force open a secret door, and are besieged by a statue. Dusting themselves down they continue to explore further below and stumble upon a bloody figure. The eyeless figure seems to have more than thoughts in its head, spewing forth more black abominations but the heroes managed to overthrow them. Deciding to venture south, rather than risk the blade bridges they find to the east, the encounter a sprung trap, but the corpses of past victims appear to rise against them.

Combat
Hanged Ones

There almost seemed to some ripple effect as the heavy corpses slammed into the group. Those at the northern part of the chamber lunging out first, striking against Kireth and Beltak.

[Damage: 3]

None of the slams against their sides from the corpses seemed to do a huge amount of harm, but the combined buffeting would not take long to take its toll.

Combat
Tradden Aversward

The corpses all around Tradden pressed close in, crushing him and leaving him no room for maneouvre.

[Hanged Ones: Engulf]

[Tradden takes 5 damage]

[Tradden is Immobilized until end of turn]

‘Whoa!’ came the muffled shout from Tradden, not for the first time that day. The initial onslaught from the mass of bodies had taken him by surprise and he was hemmed in from all sides.

‘I… can’t… move…!’

‘Much…’ he added, starting to whirl round his swords. If they wanted him — they could have him!

The fighter seemed to get the attention of almost the whole room. It was not the kind of audience he wanted but on the other hand the dance competition circuit in Deepingwald was arguably a tougher bunch so he didn’t mind. He also got the chance to do something he had always wanted to do to most of the Judges of the Deepingwald dance competition circuit. Especially Madame Alise Fevre-vau. Bitch.

Having decapitated in his mind the inept and corrupt Judges that always let Terry Goldflower win, and sliced apart six of the fiendish rope-thing-attackers in real life, Tradden was satisfied.

‘Six!’ he said, getting all excited! ‘Beat that!’

Combat
Hanged Ones

Tradden’s aggression certainly appeared to attract the attention of the corpses, their ropes twitching them towards the young fighter at speed. Those that could not reach the warrior simply struck out at the nearest warm body.

[Hanged One #09: Rope Thrust]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12-2: 21 vs Khalin’s AC (22)] - misses!

[Hanged One #11 Fly: E]

[Hanged One #11: Rope Thrust]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 13 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - critical miss!

[Hanged One #14: Rope Thrust]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12-2: 19 vs Khalin’s AC (22)] - misses!

With the amount of bodies swinging, however, the ropes found it difficult to bring their charges closer to the group, harmlessly bumping against one another.

Combat
Kireth Majere

Even as Kireth prepared himself to cast some form of spell the limp corpses crushed in around him, buffeting the mage, and making movement very difficult.

[Hanged Ones: Engulf]

[Kireth takes 5 damage]

[Kireth is Immobilized until end of turn]

The mage pushed the bodies away as best he could, freeing up the staff he held, raising it high. ‘Shirak!’ he called as the room filled with a bright white light.

[Light]

[Kireth creates magical light at the tip of his staff with a radius of 5 squares]

The half-elf’s eyes glittered from within the folds of his hood ask he continued to mutter, moving the tip of his staff from side to side.

[Staff of Light]

[Until the light spell ends, undead creatures within the radius of the light at the start of their turn take 1 radiant damage]

The throng of bodies appeared to hold no threat to the mage as Kireth casually pointed his staff over towards the southeast and with a word sent a crackling orb of lightning across the room.

[Burst Attack vs Hanged One #34’s Reflex: 1d20+9: 22] - hits!

[Damage: 11] and [Destroyed]

The energy ripped through the swinging corpses, ripping them apart at their core, bones and dried skin crumbling to dust, the ropes blackened and charred falling lifeless to the floor.

‘Nine,’ stated Kireth, a look of disappointment on his shaded face.

Combat
Hanged Ones

Even with their force shattered by the twin assaults of warrior and mage the animated ropes kept on coming.

But as some of them moved into Kireth’s light they seemed to burst into flames, the corpses crumbling and the ropes disintegrating.

[Kireth: Staff of Light]

[Hanged One #17 takes 1 damage] and [Destroyed]

[Hanged One #19 takes 1 damage] and [Destroyed]

The bodies kept coming out of the dim light, though, steering clear of the light another barrelled in at Tradden.

[Hanged One #22 Fly: E]

[Hanged One #22: Rope Thrust]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 24 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - hits!

[Damage: 3]

The time Tradden could not avoid the body, as half a skeleton crashed into his ribs.

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

As corpses and half-skeletons crashed to the floor or exploded into dust around him, the warlord whirled his craghammer. Three of the hanging bodies, one almost a full corspe, bloated and swollen, another a skeleton, its toes dragging across the stone floor, and the last just a torso, closed in, pressing together and restricting the dwarf’s movements.

[Hanged Ones: Engulf]

[Khalin takes 5 damage]

[Khalin is Immobilized until end of turn]

Khalin considered himself adept with a hammer, and Aecris was no ordinary hammer, but the dwarf knew that trying to match the tallies of his comrades’ ferocious first strikes would be futile. The warlord’s weapon of choice could be devastating to an opponent, but it would have to be one at a time.

Grumbling under his breath at the jibes that were doubtless soon to be winging his way, the dwarf took a bead on the body immediately northwest of him, harassing Beltak with its swings, and let the craghammer fly…

[Melee Basic Attack - Craghammer]

[Primary Attack vs Hanged One #07: 1d20+10: 20] - hits!

[Damage: 1d10r2+7: 17] and [Destroyed]

‘Grr… One!’ declared Khalin frustratedly as the body crumpled into dust.

Combat
Hanged Ones

At the far side of the room, near the statues in the torchlight, the bodies kept swinging, winding their way in an ungainly flight towards the group.

The one nearest to Zero struck out with a bony leg at the rogue.

[Kireth: Staff of Light]

[Hanged One #22 takes 1 damage] and [Destroyed]

[Hanged One #26 takes 1 damage] and [Destroyed]

A sharp white toe bone nearly took out Zero’s eye, but as the body of the corpse swung into the light it succumbed to Kireth’s power, bones cracking and crumbling before the rogue’s face.

The other creatures closed in around Tradden.

[Hanged One #29 Fly: N, NE]

[Hanged One #30 Fly: NE]

[Hanged One #31 Fly: NE]

Before swinging into him, trying to knock the young fighter off balance.

[Hanged One #29: Rope Thrust]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 29 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - hits!

[Damage: 3]

[Hanged One #30: Rope Thrust]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 23 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - hits!

[Damage: 3]

[Hanged One #31: Rope Thrust]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 25 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - hits!

[Damage: 3]

All three crashed into Tradden knocking him from one side to the next.

Combat
Zero Uhlit

Zero started to back away as far as he could, ensuring there was distance between him and the nearest swinging creature.

[Move: SE, …] - interrupted!

In his haste to escape the proximity of the gross undead the rogue turned his back and the nearest corpse bashed against his flank.

[Hanged One #31: Rope Thrust]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 31 vs Zero’s AC (19)] - hits!

[Damage: 3]

It almost sent him spiralling, but Zero managed to regain control of his footing across the now-stationary eyeballs and headed for the corner of the room.

[Move: …, SE, E]

Puffing out his cheeks in both relief and exertion the rogue whirled and took a bead on the largest skeleton he could see.

[Sly Flourish]

[Primary Attack vs Hanged One #08: 1d20+9: 29] - critical hit!

[Damage: 1d6+6: 12] plus [1d6: 4 critical damage] and [Destroyed]

The corpse shattered in two as the bolt struck it, collapsing to the floor and a clatter of bones.

Combat
Beltak Ancaron

Despite the tide of combat seeming to turn easily in the favour of the group the scribe and the mage were still surrounded by the hanging bodies. They pushed in around Beltak, restricting his movements.

[Hanged Ones: Engulf]

[Beltak takes 5 damage]

[Beltak is Immobilized until end of turn]

The scribe knew tht he had to clear some space for himself and Kireth to work, so grabbed his holy symbol and held it out in front of him, pushing the corpses away as best he could whilst he started to chant a well-versed prayer.

[Turn Undead]

[Area Burst 2 centred on Beltak] with [Damage: 1d10+5: 8]

[Burst Attack vs Hanged One #01’s Will: 1d20+8: 21] - hits!

[Burst Attack vs Hanged One #02’s Will: 1d20+8: 14] - hits!

[Damage: 8] and [Destroyed]

[Burst Attack vs Hanged One #05’s Will: 1d20+8: 24] - hits!

[Damage: 8] and [Destroyed]

[Burst Attack vs Hanged One #06’s Will: 1d20+8: 16] - hits!

[Damage: 8] and [Destroyed]

[Burst Attack vs Hanged One #09’s Will: 1d20+8: 25] - hits!

[Damage: 8] and [Destroyed]

[Burst Attack vs Hanged One #11’s Will: 1d20+8: 17] - hits!

[Damage: 8] and [Destroyed]

There was a bright light for a moment and the sounds of splintering bone and the puff of desiccated flesh exploding and then Beltak and Kireth appeared alone, but for a cloud of dust that was all that was left of the creatures around them.

‘Eight,’ spluttered and coughed the scribe.

Combat
Tradden Aversward

Regardless of the whirling blades and the amount of shattered corpses at his feet, the young fighter was still beset by a number of swinging bodies. They pushed past his blades, pressing in on him, not allowing him to breathe or move.

[Hanged Ones: Engulf]

[Tradden takes 5 damage]

[Tradden is Immobilized until end of turn]

Five left, was it? Tradden was increasingly tired and finding it hard to focus through sheer exhaustion. Best to focus on one thing at a time — less enemies meant less danger!

[Cleave]

[Primary Attack vs Hanged One #30: 1d20+12: 31] - hits!

[Damage: 1d8+7: 11] and [Destroyed]

[Hanged One #26 takes 4 splash damage] and [Destroyed]

Heaving with all his might, Tradden cleaved out with both swords held together. There was blessedly little resistance from either of the two monstrosities in front of him, and they both tumbled to the ground. That made him feel a little better.

‘Eight…’ he grinned to no one in particular. It wasn’t a competition he was going to win given Kireth was in “Apocalypse Mode”, but it was still a total to be proud of.

Combat
Hanged Ones

The furthest west of the creatures seemed consumed by Tradden’s blades, starting to float over to where the young fighter continued his dervish melee.

[Kireth: Staff of Light]

[Hanged One #15 takes 1 damage] and [Destroyed]

It was the half-hanging corpse that was consumed, however, the light upon Kireth’s staff stripping it of its necromantic energy, forever destroying its bonds, and reducing it to ash.

Combat
Kireth Majere

From within the dust of exploded and disintegrating flesh and bone Kireth strode forward, seemingly untouched by the chaos swirling around him. His black robes swirling behind him as he brought forward the light.

[Move: S, S]

He hesitated for only a second, though not with fear, just indecision on which of the hanging creatures he would dispose of next.

[Magic Missile]

[Primary Attack vs Hanged One #29] - automatic hit!

[Damage: 2+4+1: 7] and [Destroyed]

He chose the one to his right and the thing exploded as the small ball of force struck it in the neck.

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

‘Whoever gets the last one wins!’ snarled Khalin with glee as he strode towards the remaining floating corpse.

[Move: S]

With that he swept the spike of the hammer up at the body…

[Melee Basic Attack - Craghammer]

[Primary Attack vs Hanged One #31: 1d20+10: 16] - misses!

But the hammer glanced off as the dwarf roared with pent-up frustration.

’Nine hells!’

Combat
Hanged Ones

The corpse swung wildly from the noose around its neck after the buffeting from the hammer, back and forth, constantantly glaring at the dwarf, its eyeless sockets dark and the enforced grin of a bare jaw mocking the warlord.

[Kireth: Staff of Light]

[Hanged One #31 takes 1 damage] and [Destroyed]

The mocking stopped as the light from Kireth’s staff played over the body, the creature crumbling to dust — the dust spray caused from its swinging movement cascading over the dwarf’s helm and armour.

‘It seems I win,’ suggested the mage from behind Khalin’s shoulder.
