Armour of Thorns
The Gatehouse Tunnel

…continues from Book #01, Chapter #11, Scene #06

Synopsis

5th Day of Tarsakh in the Year of the Sudden Journey
Leaving the perils of the Stonemarch behind them, the group head east and north to meet up with Altair's Talons at the northern range of the Cairngorm mountains. A lone peak with a shattered outcrop awaits them for the meeting point; before they attempt to cross the mountains through the orc-guarded pass and finally reach the Nentir Vale.
Finding a magic circle within the foothills they start a chain of events with the music of the wind that ends in a blast of lightning and thunder. Reeling from the shock they recover to see an insurgence of goblinkind that ends in a battle that they just about win. From the blast is born a female dwarf and the group take her under their wing before travelling north in the mountainous foothills to find the meeting place with the Talons.
There they find the Talons under siege and combat the orcs that harass them, but not before one of the ogres in the foes' group collapses the cave entrance that many of the Talons may be sheltering in. After defeating the orcs and ogres and rescuing the Talons from the cave, the group march onwards, finding the gatehouse to the mountain pass.
Attacking under darkness allows the group to swiftly despatch the courtyard orcs, but now they try to enter the gatehouse itself.

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

Khalin saw the rope drop, and waved Zero to take up Tradden's invitation. As the rogue nodded in assent, the marshal turned to the others.

‘Hug the wall, that should keep us out of the kill zone,’ he said.

[Khalin: Move: S, S, E, E, E]

And he led the way carefully along the southern wall towards the beckoning archway further along.

Combat
Sorrow

Sorrow followed Khalin swiftly, keeping to the side of the tunnel as the marshal had indicated.

[Sorrow: Move: SE, S, S, E, E]

She slowly came up to the side of the dwarf and waited patiently for him to move on.

Combat
Rhasgar

Noting the movements of the others, Rhasgar decided to take the northern wall of the tunnel.

[Rhasgar: Move: NE, NE, E, E, E, E]

He inched against the wall slowly, keeping his eyes on the murder holes above.

Combat
Kireth Majere

Gathering his cloak with a scowl, Kireth moved to the centre of the entrance of the tunnel to see what all of the fuss was for himself.

[Kireth: Move: E, E, E, E, E, SE]

Eyeing the murder holes and the others clinging to the walls he contemplated moving in regardless, but then thought better of it.

[Kireth: Dash: N, NE, E, E, E]

He followed in Rhasgar's footsteps along the northern wall of the tunnel.

Combat
Rangrim Ironnose

Rangrim too decided that moving into the tunnel was the best bet at the moment.

[Rangrim: Move: NE, E, E]

He was quickly behind Kireth and motioned for Zero to either follow, or use the rope, but do it quickly.

Combat
Aukan

With Zero looking like he was safe up the rope — though Aukan wasn't completely convinced the rogue was alright based on his twitching legs — he decided to take off after Rangrim.

[Aukan: Move: E, E, E, E, NE, E, E]

He strode into the tunnel, being careful to follow Khalin's instructions.

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

Khalin shuffled along the tunnel wall as quickly as he dared, still keeping an eye on the murder holes in the ceiling not too far away.

[Khalin: Move: E, E, E, E, E]

Looking around the corner, Khalin could make out a stable of sorts, a large chamber with a sandy floor and holding three unhitched carts, all with large bamboo cages on them. There was no sign of any animals here, and the sand was compact and clean indicating none had been here recently.

There didn't appear to be any other exits from the stable — the high and solid walls of the gatehouse on all of its sides.

As he looked back towards the others, Khalin spied a metal door on the northern wall of the tunnel, hidden carefully from view from the main western entrance in a small alcove.

[Khalin: Investigation Check: 1d20+0: 15] – success!

Khalin frowned. As they had looked upon the gatehouse from afar, and even when they had gotten closer on the outside in the courtyard, the marshal had thought that the stonework had a distinctly dwarven feel to its architecture, but the size of doorway here inside the tunnel and the heights of the floors of the gatehouse now seemed bigger than what dwarves may have carved — too big even for men, and definitely of finer craftsmanship than men could ever muster. He glanced at Aukan, wondering whether his folk may have crafted this section.

A quick look above him revealed that the murder holes did not reach this far into the tunnel.
