Orc Beastmaster

01

The orc holding the leashes appeared to be struggling with its charges. They were not hounds, Khalin saw that when he looked again, they were strange beasts, their faces like the gnolls they had seen in the ruin, hyenas probably. They looked vicious, regardless. Most of them were snapping their jaws now, drooling, and pulling hard on the leash.

‘Gozack!’ brayed the orc at them, holding them back, and for a moment they steadied themselves.

[Delay]

It looked as though the orc were waiting for something, keeping a tight rein on its beasts.

Orc Archers

02

The archer, on the other hand, didn’t appear to want to wait. The orc behind the ropes already had its target set on Tradden, the youth slightly vulnerable up the tree. With a glint of a smile on crooked and stained teeth it let go of the bowstring.

[Orc Archer #01: Ranged Basic Attack - Longbow]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+11+2-2: 16 vs Tradden’s AC (20+2)] - misses!

The arrow thudded into the tree right next to Tradden’s head, burying itself in the wood.

Another orc with a drawn bow rose up out of the undergrowth to the northeast. This one aimed at Rangrim and let fly.

[Orc Archer #02: Ranged Basic Attack - Longbow]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+11: 20 vs Rangrim’s AC (20+2)] - misses!

The arrow skidded into the undergrowth near the dwarf as Rangrim ducked down.

Zero Uhlit

Zero peered around the edge of the wagon, safe in the knowledge he had some cover at least. Through the thick pines he could just about make out the back of one of the orcs, looking like it was about to spring out onto the trail.

Without hesitation he drew his crossbow and fired through the trees, aware that it would take a pinpoint shot.

[Gloaming Cut]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Runner #01: 1d20+9-5+2: 10] - misses!

[Stealth Check: 1d20+14: 18] - success!

[Zero is hidden and gains Combat Advantage against all enemies]

The bolt thudded into one of the first trees and the rogue ducked down behind the wagon with a curse.

Cacklefiend Hyena

04

From out of the trees near the rest of the pack of hyenas burst a hideous sight. It was similar to the other beasts, but was larger and more powerful, with black mottled fur. Its jaws were agape with steaming saliva dripping onto the floor where the leaves and steams of the bushes hissed and shrivelled where they were splattered.

It seemed to cough and bark to itself convulsively as it leaped effortlessly through the undergrowth.

[Move: SE, SE, S, SW, S]

It appeared to ignore Rangrim somewhat, bounding into the undergrowth at the other side of the trail from the dwarf.

From its maw it uttered a cackle not of this world, a low, hideous sound that broke and grew in violence as though it had come direct from the gates of the Abyss. All who heard it shuddered in fear.

Orc Runners

05

With the thud of a quivering bolt just behind it the orc nearest the wagon weaved expertly through the trees looking for the puny human with the crossbow.

[Orc Runner #01 Move: SW]

It knew the human had disappeared somewhere behind the wagon, but where?

[Orc Runner #01 Perception Check: 1d20+1: 8] - failure!

It looked from side to side, but not downwards, where the crouching Zero looked up in fear.

The orc it had left in the woods followed suit, but instead of rounding the wagon came alongside it, just below Kireth’s feet.

[Orc Runner #02 Move: S, S, S]

It reached up with powerful arms, trying to grab the mage’s feet.

[Orc Runner #02: Grab]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+5: 10 vs Kireth’s Reflex (18)] - misses!

Kireth slammed the butt of his staff down hard on the orc’s bony hand and it recoiled in pain.

Kireth Majere

06

Kireth glared down at the creature. He had had men swing swords at him, mages throw powerful magics at him, and numerous foul beasts try and make a meal of him but no-one, no-one, had tried to grab his feet. How dare it! The mage practically screamed the words of the spell, such was the insult.

[Nightmare Eruption]

[Damage: 1d8+5: 7]

[Cacklefiend Hyena takes 4 psychic splash damage]

Kireth wasn’t sure what horrors the orc saw before it, perhaps memories of a master whipping it as the mage noticed the scars on the beats back as it turned and held its head in a scream. He heard another scream from behind the wagon, another orc perhaps, and the throaty howl of the strange elemental beast — for surely that’s what it was — nearby.

Rangrim Ironnose

Rangrim whirled around to face the strange blackened beast behind him that had let out such a fearful howl. He had seen Tradden was in a precarious position and that there must be an archer somewhere, but he couldn’t see it, so there was nothing he could do. However, he could confront the beast that drooled and thrashed before him.

The dwarf stepped confidently back towards the trail and twirled his twin hammers in anticipation.

[Move: W]

‘Come on, ye bastard!’ shouted the dwarf and charged into the beast’s flank.

[Flailing Shove]

[Orc Runner #02 takes 2+3: 5 splash damage]

The hammer struck the beast on the rump and it tumbled into the undergrowth and away from the dwarf in a flurry of claws and fangs, catching the orcs surrounding the wagon with vicious-looking cuts.

‘Ye want more, eh?’ responded the dwarf as the beast picked itself up and growled back at him.

Combat
Tradden Aversward

08

‘Hmm,’ said Tradden, to no-one in particular. The only thing that heard it was the hedgehog down below, who nodded sagely — it had known climbing the tree had been a bad idea from the start.

Tradden realised he wasn’t doing any good up high. He needed to be down on the ground, but that would take ages the way he had come and that was without taking into account the orc behind the webs taking pot-shots at him!

Kireth would have derided Tradden’s speed of thinking had the topic ever come up in conversation and that was probably a fair comment. However, in some respects Tradden’s thought processes left everyone standing…

[Nature Check: 1d20+5: 20] - success!

Unhooking the rope from around his shoulder Tradden sunk the axe end into a choice branch with a strong chopping motion. Passing the bundle of rope around the branch once for good luck he then let go of the main bundle, allowing it to drop down below, whilst still holding onto the other end. Without further ado he pushed himself off the tree and into mid air, away from the battle below!

[Athletics Check: 1d20+12: 32] - critical success!

Gravity quickly did its thing and the fighter fell downwards. However, as the rope tightened the fall turned into an arc, and Tradden was soon heading back towards the melee by the wagon. As he passed the apex of the swing he let go, momentum carrying him up into the air for a moment, where he performed a neat double pike. A quick shake of his feet at the same time saw two daggers fly up into the air.

[Falling]

[Damage: 2d10: 10]

[Acrobatics Check: 1d20+11: 20] - success!

[Tradden reduces damage by half of Acrobatics check to 0 damage]

As the young fighter hit the ground between Khalin and Rangrim the wind went out of him. The eladrin chain — painstakingly repaired with care by Caldring — locked together in an all-too-tight embrace and for a moment Tradden thought he would pass out with the shock.

As he rolled he looked up, everything seemed to be passing by slowly. The smells of the forest were assaulting his throat, gulps of sickly-sweet pine like a draught of wine rather than a taste of air. Colours were vibrant too, the rich greens of the undergrowth thicker, brighter, and somehow more real. The boughs of the trees dark, brown and mottled in complex patterns and rhythms the youth had never seen before. Even the dusty trail, interspersed with the beautifully rounded cobbles, was a carpet of gleaming jewels of sand and gravel.

The wagon before him was intricately carved out of the most exquisite woods, layered one on top of another and fashioned into elongated curves that accentuated the look of both speed and majesty heightened by the pair of sleek black horses that were harnessed at the front. Atop the driving plate was an old man — a long white beard to his knees betraying his age — dressed in greens and browns of such magnificence they almost matched the distorted forest. He held out a white hand, an onyx signet ring with a crest upon it, reaching out for Tradden to climb up.

He began to reach out as the chain relaxed its grip and he found himself snapping back into the bleak tones of the pine forest, surrounded by his companions and rising to a stand with the momentum of his roll.

The effect was complete when two daggers landed point-down on either side of him.

Tradden completed his stand, for once without words, an elaborate show or a cocky smile. Khalin, who was beginning to get used to this kind of thing didn’t even look sideways. Rangrim’s day wasn’t getting any better.

‘Show off…’ was all the dwarf could manage.

Combat
Orc Eye of Gruumsh

09

An orc brandishing a carved spear marched out of the undergrowth to the northeast bellowing order and pointing furiously at the wagon with the point of the spear.

‘Gachak! Gachak!’ it blared at the skulking orcs next to the wagon. ‘Dak! Dak!’ it stabbed, pointing at Kireth with the tip.

It came forwards itself, bounding onto the trail, closing in on the group.

[Move: SW, SW, SW, W]

As it closed in it brandished its spear once more, feathers and bones near its point jangling together as it was thrust in the general direction of one of the orcs. ‘Dak! Dak!’ it repeated.

[Swift Arm of Destruction]

[Orc Runner #02 makes a Melee Basic Attack as a free action]

The orc responded to its leader and made a grab for Kireth’s legs once more.

[Orc Runner #02: Grab]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+5: 6 vs Kireth’s Reflex (18)] - critical miss!

As before, though, Kireth’s staff came down hard on the orc’s hand and it withdrew with a snarl.

The spear-wielder made a snarl of its own and glared at the mage atop the wagon.

[Eye of Wrath]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+8: 28 vs Kireth’s Will (16)] - critical hit!

[Kireth takes a -4 penalty to AC (Save Ends)]

A cold fear overcame the mage. He had fought battles with powerful enemies before, but for a moment he felt this orc had the better of him.

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

10

Khalin’s visage broke into a wicked grin as he heard the familiar cackling of goblinoid voices. Truth be told he was no great fan of spiders, but orcs? Well, they were just the sort of thing he liked to feed his hammer.

Whirling towards the nearest sound he plunged towards the trees, making a beeline for one of the nearest orcs.

[Move: W]

Raising Aecris as best he could in the confines of the undergrowth, he swung at the rascal.

[Melee Basic Attack - Craghammer]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Runner #02: 1d20+10: 14] - misses!

The warlord’s attack caught in the undergrowth slowing the power of the swing. The orc easily knocked it aside.

SEP
03

Combat
Rhasgar

11

The howl from the strange hyena had unnerved Rhasgar somewhat and he resolved that he would address that beast within the course of the combat. Khalin, however, had headed that way and he believed the warlord would handle that situation.

‘Rangrim, protect the wagon!’ the dragonborn shouted, before heading away from the wagon to confront the orc that seemed to be directing affairs.

[Move: N, N, NE]

Striking into the undergrowth, Rhasgar got a better look at the adversary before him. The orc was a little bigger than the rest, but still thin and covered with what appeared to be the marks of lashes and worse. It was an ugly brute, with a huge spear its only physical weapon, but the sheer terror of its face was somehow another. One eye had been cut or torn out, the scars and tissue left to bulge and rot in its place. Its flea-bitten leather jerking and filthy fur cloak did nothing to hide its hideous brutality.

With more vicious beast lurking in the trees Rhasgar had to offer what help he could to all of those around him. Raising his scimitar he made a show of the blade, calling upon Bahamut to steer his hand.

[Righteous Smite]

[Primary Attack vs Orc Eye of Gruumsh: 1d20+11-2: 26] - hits!

[Khalin gains 5+2: 7 temporary hit points]

[Kireth gains 5+2: 7 temporary hit points]

[Zero gains 5+2: 7 temporary hit points]

The blade fell on the orc, cutting it across the shoulder, and the warming energy that it seemed to released filled all of Rhasgar’s allies with a divine strength. These orcs were weak and could be beaten.

The dragonborn shouted at the orc, drawing its attention, trying to keep it focused only on him.

[Divine Challenge]

[Orc Eye of Gruumsh is Marked]

The orc’s eye seethed at the paladin. How dare it attack him, how dare it strike its body?

Combat
Hyenas

12

With yelps and growls from the edge of the trees the pack of hyenas was let loose by the beastmaster. Leather leashes were let go with a sharp, barked word and the beasts darted forwards.

They appeared to attack in pairs, the first two struck out towards Rhasgar with jaws outstretched. One took a direct route, the other circling around to the east and then striking through the trees.

[Hyena #01 Move: S, S, S]

[Hyena #02 Move: S, S, SE, SW]

The first one snapped at Rhasgar’s legs, trying to draw the dragonborn away from the orc.

[Hyena #01: Melee Basic Attack - Bite]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+7: 8 vs Rhasgar’s AC (23)] - misses!

Rhasgar turned to face it and swat it away with his shield.

The second hyena’s circling run gave it some advantage, though. As Rhasgar was busy with the first it snapped at him unawares from his flank.

[Hyena #02: Melee Basic Attack - Bite]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+7+2: 23 vs Rhasgar’s AC (23)] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+3+2: 8] plus [1d6: 6 pack attack damage]

It bit deep drawing a grimace from the paladin.

The second pair leapt out towards Rangrim, the first coming from the side and the second bulleting straight for him.

[Hyena #03 Move: S, S, SE]

[Hyena #04 Move: S, S, S, S]

They snapped quickly, trying to maul the dwarf’s legs with their sharp bites.

[Hyena #04: Melee Basic Attack - Bite]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+7: 19 vs Rangrim’s AC (20+1)] - misses!

They just managed to grab the legs of his armour though, without piercing the skin. The dwarf wheeled and swiped his hammer at them in frustration.

‘Get these bloody things off me!’ he shouted.

Combat
Orc Beastmaster

13

The beastmaster climbed out of the undergrowth and onto the trail, casting down the leashes and drawing a large flail.

[Move: SE, S, S]

It made a series of guttural screeches as the hyenas, their ears pricking up ready to obey any commands. They looked ready to move on a moment’s notice, yet seemed restricted in their actions due to the tangle of undergrowth underfoot.

The large orc twirled its flail, but for now seemed content to let the beasts do their work.

Orc Archers

The archer behind the webs looked disgusted that its quarry had managed to escape so easily. The thought of shooting the human from the tree to fall to a grisly demise had, for a moment, lifted its spirits. Nevertheless, through the webs and trees it could see one of the dragon-kin moving forwards and this could be its next victim.

With slow and steady movements it clambered through the webs until it was free of their confinement.

[Orc Archer #01 Move: N, N, NW]

It then took a steady aim on the dragonborn, hoping for a kill.

[Orc Archer #01: Ranged Basic Attack - Longbow]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+11: 22 vs Rhasgar’s AC (23)] - misses!

The shot thudded into the dragonborn’s shield, much to the orc’s disgust.

The second archer ventured forwards from the tree line.

[Orc Archer #02 Move: SW, W]

The enemy were surrounded and hopelessly outnumbered by the hyenas and would fall quickly. The honour was in the number of kills, however, and the archer was keen to make his stake. It drew a number of arrows from its quiver and let fly with a quick volley.

Zero breathed a barely audible sigh of relief as the orc missed spotting him in the melee. His position was good behind the wagon, but it was only a matter of time before one of the orcs would spot him. Time to move on. The trees to the south looked a good vantage point, he’d get some cover there.

He slipped silently away, keeping in a crouch, and firing a bolt into the orc’s legs hoping to confuse it.

Zero faded further into the trees, hiding behind their trunks and paused for breath and composure.

Combat
Orc Runners

17

The orc with the bolt through its leg limped around the side of the wagon, obviously in pain, but fearful of the wrath it may incur of not following orders.

[Orc Runner #01 Shift: SW]

Behind it, to the west, many of the Talons were locked in a similar struggle with more orcs and for now the wagon was poorly defending by an aging dwarf and a puny human. Someone had shot it in the leg but the orc could not see the marksman. The hounds would see to him, it was sure. Perhaps they’d enjoy the brief chase through the trees until they bore down upon him and ripped his flesh from his bones.

With a wicked grin the orc reached up towards the puny human, extending a huge hand to grasp at Kireth’s legs.

[Orc Runner #01: Grab]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+5: 7 vs Kireth’s Reflex (18)] - misses!

The mage seemed to be tiring of the game and the staff banged down on the orc’s hand barely before it had reached the footplate. The hand withdrew with a snarl.

Whilst Kireth’s attention was focused on one orc, however, the one at the other side of the wagon took the opportunity.

[Orc Runner #02: Grab]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+5: 14 vs Kireth’s Reflex (18)] - misses!

The mage was too quick, however, and a spin of the staff — which would even have impressed Tradden — brought the butt down on the thing’s skull and it too withdrew.

Kireth Majere

18

Tiring of the game was an understatement of the highest order. Mages in general do not appreciate being ‘grabbed’ at. Adding Kireth’s temperament into the equation provided an extremely volatile mix. He glared down at the two offenders, who, as if sensing danger, instinctively shrank back.

It would not save them.

The fury building within the mage, his hand began to shake and then… glow.

Rangrim Ironnose

Rangrim looked from side to side wildly at the thrashing teeth and snarls from the hyenas in the undergrowth next to the trail. There was no clear way for him to move.

‘I can’t get to the bloody wagon, Rhasgar,’ he shouted, swatting away one of the creature’s snouts with the flat of his hammer. ‘That mage seems to be in charge over there, let him handle the wagon, let me deal with these bloody dogs!’

Without waiting for an answer he feinted one way, then another, and then brought his hammer down on the side of the head of the hyena in front of him.

The strike was true and caught the hyena on the temple. Rangrim was so sure the beast would fall that he’d almost started moving forwards. The thing was hurt, badly, but it still stood, baring its teeth and preventing the dwarf from going anywhere.

‘By the Nine Hells!’ he exclaimed in frustration. ‘Rhasgar, we’re in trouble!’

There seemed a sudden shift in Rangrim’s cloak as he uttered a soft word and it seemed to gather weight.

Tradden Aversward

Tradden had come across people like Rangrim before — people who were in many ways quite similar to him! The problem with that, in his experience, was that such folk fell into one of two categories — those that he got on with like a house on fire and those that he just ended up not getting on with. He hoped Rangrim would fall into the former category as he quite liked the brusque dwarf.

The youth drew both his swords and stepped forwards as he thought about it.

[Move: NW]

In any event, Tradden felt his territory was being stepped upon.

‘Hey!’ he chided Rangrim, playfully. ‘That’s my line!’

‘Go on, lad!’ he heard Khalin roar, which spurred him on to attempt an additional strike — a quick flick of the wrist to try and catch the orc with the longsword again.

‘Kachak! Hakkah! Gorko magi, magi slako!’ came the guttural shouts.

[Recharge: 1d6: 2] - failure!

The orc near the wagon, however, appeared to be too distracted by Tradden’s blades to heed the words.

With what seemed to be a curse the orc turned its attention back to the melee and Rhasgar before it. With a withering glare it tried to intimidate the dragonborn.

[Eye of Wrath]

‘This will not bloody do!’ he roared.

Rangrim had faired better though. Khalin still was not quite sure what to make of his kinsman, but there was no doubting he was made of stern stuff.

‘Put those dogs out of their misery, Rangrim!’ he yelled.

Rangrim didn’t waste any time acting on Khalin’s command with an impulsive strike at the hyena nearest him. The beast wasn’t expecting the dwarf to attack so quickly and was caught on its foreleg, the sound of splintering bone audible over the battlefield.

Khalin looked for a more advantageous position but with all the undergrowth he couldn’t move without the orc nearest him getting in a swing. For now, at least until he regained his full composure, he would remain where he was.

He nodded at the orc in respect of its abilities, but perhaps not of its morals. He was wary now and had to ensure that he did not let his guard down.

He turned his head slightly to the left, the hyenas snapping and yelping at his flank. A wry smile covered his scaly face — they might not expect his next move.

He opened his mouth as if to shout an order, but instead of words of command there came a jet of cold blue lightning, as though the paladin were truly a dragon.

The dragonborn was not finished, though, and swung his blade at the one-eyed orc before stepping back slightly to cover Rangrim with his shield.

The orc nearest the wagon appeared to be in two minds. It had been pushed against the side of the wagon by the youth that was now splayed out in the undergrowth — one that had a weapon trained on it. Yet it had been given orders. Which did it fear more; the prostrate youth with the sword or its own master?

Years of subjugation won out and the creature turned back to the wagon to follow its master’s heed and looked to attack the mage.

Tradden was not unaware of the orc’s intentions, however, having moved into a position ready to defend the wagon. Even as he was being mauled by the hyenas and dodging a wicked flail lunge all from the confines of the forest floor, he still managed to thrust out his sword as the orc clambered up the wagon with his back turned to him.

‘Get to the bloody wagon,’ Rangrim muttered as he swung his hammer out in front of him to ward off the snapping beasts. ‘Can’t bloody move from here for a start.’

The folds of the dwarf’s cloak seemed to have returned to normal — the impact of the one-eyed orc’s thrust being diverted for a moment by its previous rigidity.

‘Sort that one-eyed freak out, Rhasgar!’ the dwarf bellowed. ‘I’ll get rid of these hounds. Then we can get to the wagon.’

In other circumstances Tradden might have thrown a quip in Rangrim’s direction, but right now he was in too much pain to really think about it.

Indeed, he hadn’t even really noticed Kireth’s show of force — he was focused on the job at hand, which was currently the two enemies adjacent to him. Shaking the vicious dog-thing off him he rolled sideways and stood up.

[Move: Stand]

The bolt thudded into the hyena’s rear and before it could react to Zero’s risky attack it collapsed to the floor. The orcs appeared not to have noticed the black shape move out and then back into the trees, but the cacklefiend hyena’s ears pricked up and its muzzle turned round to scan the tree line.

Combat
Cacklefiend Hyena

40

The blackened hyena seemed to steam in the undergrowth, its drool drawing hisses and splutters from the plant life beneath it and a thin cloud of noxious vapour. Tradden’s blades, arcing from side to side, drew patterns in the steam and eventually nicked cuts and scratches from the beast.

[Tradden: Rain of Steel Stance]

[Damage: 1d8+4: 12]

The creature howled and hissed back at the fighter before turning abruptly and leaping for the wagon.

Tradden had been keeping a close eye on the larger dog-thing, wary of sudden movement. His attentions proved worthwhile — the thing crouched as if to spring towards the cart, surely bounding after Kireth. As powerful as Tradden knew the mage was becoming, he wasn’t going to last long with every orc and his dog smashing into him.

In a flash the fighter hacked at the creature’s hamstrings, trying to prevent it from taking the leap at all.

[Tradden: Melee Basic Attack - Frost Lomgsword]

[Opportunity Attack vs Cacklefiend Hyena: 1d20+12+2: 25] - hits!

[Damage: 1d8+7+4: 13] and [Bloodied]

The strike opened up deep wounds in its hind legs. In an instant the beast almost seemed to explode. A gout of fizzing liquid, noxious smelling and fizzing burst out of the beast in all directions, covering and burning anyone close.

[Acid Bloodspurt]

[Close Burst 1] with [Damage: 2d8: 16]

[Burst Attack vs Tradden] - automatic hit!

[Damage: 16] and [Ongoing 5 acid damage (Save Ends)]

Tradden beamed and was about to make a suitably amazing quip (it was about the ‘orc and his dog’ bit — Tradden thought it was rather clever), but he was stopped in his tracks due to the large amount of acid that suddenly covered him and he was instead left to hiss in pain. He started to black out due to the pain but just, only just, managed to stay on his feet…

With a snarl the beast turned back and snapped at the dazed youth.

[Melee Basic Attack - Bite]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+10: 30 vs Tradden’s AC (21-4+2+1)] - interrupted!

Khalin had already started moving towards Tradden, the outcome of the beast’s ferocious attack fairly clear in his mind. The burly dragonborn too edged quickly towards the youth with his shield out raised.

The fighter had absolutely no idea what was happening, but his sense of danger screamed out at him. In in instant he had activated the teleporting bracers and so neatly avoided the sharp, acidic teeth. In the blink of an eye he was stood some fifteen feet away, further up the trail.

‘Ha ha!’ he said, but rather tamely — the exertions of the battle were starting to take their toll.

The cacklefiend snapped down on empty space as the young fighter disappeared into thin air.

Kireth Majere

The stars cleared from his vision as the mage sucked air back into his lungs. Ever calculating, he quickly considered the available options.

‘Always plan ten steps ahead,’ he heard the voice of one of his old tutors say. Plan ten steps ahead? Bah! Small minded fools, he planned ten years ahead.

That, however, was all well and good when someone wasn’t trying to smash your skull in. The presence of the beastmaster loomed into Kireth’s immediate thoughts. Scrambling to his feet was the obvious, instinctive, choice but it would waste valuable seconds, seconds in which his life could be put to an abrupt end. No, he would gamble and try beat the creature to the punch.

With a flick of his slender wrists, three arcane bolts bit into their mark.

[Magic Missile]

The second bolt slammed into its chest and sent it back against a tree.

[Magic Missile]

The third bolt ploughed a hole through its chest and nearly tore the tree apart.

Rangrim had flinched backwards involuntarily when the cacklefiend had seemed to explode.

‘Bloody hells!’ he exclaimed when Tradden had started to sizzle. The youth then disappeared as the hyena tried to finish him off and popped back into existence further up the trail.

‘Bloody show off,’ the dwarf continued. ‘Well if that lanky streak doesn’t make a good meal, then try me for size!’ he shouted at the blackened form before charging towards it.

[Move: W]

He stopped a little short with a grin on his face and dodged from side to side, twirling hammers as he did so, taunting the beast.

Tradden’s skin and clothes continued to steam and sizzle as the acid ate into them. The pain was becoming excruciating. As he looked up he could see the archers and the one-eyed orc glaring at him. Maybe he wasn’t in such a good position.

[Ongoing Acid Damage]

[Damage: 5]

Tradden burned all over — it really, really hurt.

Part of him wanted to just curl up, or hide in a corner. However, that would be letting the others down and would be no guarantee of safety anyway.

Gritting his teeth he walked towards the forest where the orcs were. If he was going to go down, he would go down fighting!

He then steeled himself against any onslaught.

[Damage: 1d8+4: 9]

The blades kept the orc on its back foot slicing across its chest and it looked across to its comrades for assistance.

[Swift Arm of Destruction]

[Recharge: 1d6: 1] - failure!

However, they too looked to be pressed with the fighter’s blades and were in no position to follow the one-eyed orc’s instructions.

The thing growled and hefted its spear, thrusting it out at Tradden.

[Damage: 1d8+3: 6]

The cuts on the orc seemed to close before Tradden’s eyes when the spear bit into the young fighter’s leg.

It then looked for somewhere to go, out of the way of the human’s blades, but there was nowhere obvious. It couldn’t afford to take its eye of the warrior, so moving into the undergrowth or through the ropes was out of the question. It decided to stay — it would finish off the youth itself.

The archers seemed to shed no tear as the one-eyed orc fell, they simply acted on its last words.

The first of the pair quickly stowed its bow over its shoulder and took off towards the webs.

‘Somebody stop it!’ shouted Khalin, but it was too late, the creature clambered through the ropes with ease and appeared to set off own the trail at speed.

[Orc Archer #01 Move: SE, S, S, S]

It could still be seen further down the trail, but then instead of the expected flight to the east it turned sharply and plunged into the tree line to the southwest.

[Orc Archer #01 Move: SW, SW, SW]

It disappeared within the trees, hard to spot, but could be heard crashing through the undergrowth.

The second orc looked to act too, but first had to deal with Tradden’s blades. They whirled and cut through the air and there was no escape.

[Tradden: Rain of Steel Stance]

[Orc Archer #02 Damage: 1d8+4: 12]

Escape it tried, though, and it too backed off towards the webbing.

Tradden was on it in an instant.

[Orc Archer #01 Move: E, SE, SE]

It then turned and raised its bow, aiming at the hapless pair on the trail. It unleashed a volley of arrows.

Zero couldn’t see the orcs, but he could hear them crashing about in the trees. Without a line of sight there was no way he could do anything about them. The cackling hyena, on the other hand, he could at least try to stop.

It was just at the back of the wagon and he didn’t have a clear shot, so he moved through the trees to his right to get a better angle.

The last orders of the one-eye were clear in its inhuman mind and it would carry them out to the letter, regardless of its own safety.

[Ongoing Damage]

[Damage: 8]

First it steeled itself against the deep cut that the dwarf had opened over its skull. Then it ignored the dragonborn’s shouted challenge and even the twin hammers of the dwarf before it and leapt up lithely onto the top of the wagon.

[Move: SW]

Rangrim was ready for any flight, however, and struck quickly.

[Rangrim: Melee Basic Attack - Warhammer]

[Opportunity Attack vs Cacklefiend Hyena: 1d20+11: 17] - misses!

The hyena was too quick for the dwarf and the hammer thrashed into the undergrowth behind it.

For a moment the beast was confused — the wagon was laden with several goods and sacks and chests. However, in seconds the beast honed in on its prize, its radiance obvious to its nature. It briefly considered snapping at the old dwarf hiding at the front of the wagon, but that would waste valuable time. Clenching a sack in its dripping jaws it leapt down once more and sprinted off towards the trees with the prize.

The scene didn’t look good. A wicked black arrow jutted out of the warlord’s chest and the dwarf was barely breathing.

Difficult choices. That is what life seemed to come down to these days. Difficult choices.

The heat of battle seemed to speed Tradden’s mind up considerably and in truth the decision was made in a flash. It was hard — very hard in actual fact, but he knew Khalin would understand and agree it was the right thing to do.

He couldn’t help the warlord. Rhasgar likely could, and the dragonborn had already been summoned by Rangrim.

The orc nearest to him was clearly on its last legs — let Rangrim have him!

‘Hang in there, master dwarf!’ yelled the fighter as he skipped past, rounding the corner as he did so.

Tradden’s guess as to where the enemy were was spot on — he saw them both for the merest of seconds, the movement of the foliage betraying their positions. Interestingly, that wasn’t all that appeared to be hidden in the woods.

However, it had a job to do, and grabbed the tumbling sack as quickly as it could. The rough sack caught on some of the brambles and the orc had to yank quite hard to pull its prize free. It came up with a tattered shred of the sack surrounding a bronze orb. Stuffing the thing in the crook of its arm it took off, this time back towards the east.
