Combat
Tradden Aversward

Tradden turned his head to stare at Khalin.

‘No more pulling strange chains!’ he whispered, half scaldingly.

At that moment the noises coming from the recesses became more than just eerie sounds — strange creatures started to shamble forwards. Tradden immediately recognised them, having seen their kind before. These were the same pitiful beings, perhaps once human but now with shriveled and discolored flesh that he and Khalin had encountered in the bog marsh to the southeast of Blackengorge. Well, they were similar enough — these ones were an unnatural grey whereas the others had been a greeny-yellow, but they were still ghouls nonetheless.

Tradden shivered as a memory of Khalin, still and seemingly lifeless on the floor of the barrow in the marsh, crossed his mind.

With that the fighter stepped back, almost instinctively, next to Beltak.

[Shift: NE]

‘Alright, Beltak, we hold this end of the corridor. These guys move slowly but don’t be fooled, they pack a punch and have a nasty reach.’

[Total Defence]

[Tradden gains +2 bonus to all defences until the start of next turn]

Bracing himself for the attacks bound to come he steeled himself mentally and limbered up, ready to make the corridor as difficult a place as possible for the ghouls to be.

[Rain of Steel]

[Enemies starting turn adjacent to Tradden take 1[W] damage until stance ends]

He started to move his swords around in arc, daring the ghouls to enter their deadly reach.

Combat
Ghoul #01

The grey creatures were far from shambling corpses.

As soon as the wall nearest the western doors had parted enough for one of the ghouls to push through the creature was out, looking to and fro with darkened sockets. It seemed to focus on the nearest living thing, the human beyond the wall of blades and darted in with unnerving speed, its long limbs thrashing at the face of Tradden with sharp, yellow claws.

[Move: S, E, E, E]

It caught the blades against the flat of its arms and struck at the young fighter’s face.

[Claws]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 16 vs Tradden’s AC (21+2)] - misses!

The blades did their work, however, pushing the ghoul back far enough so that its claws could not reach his face.

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

‘Ghouls. Ruddy ghouls! Why is there never gold when you pull these things?’ cursed the understandably aggrieved dwarf, shuddering just a little as he cast his mind back to his previous encounter with these undead scourge.

With a harrumph he readied his trusty craghammer and, ducking carefully past Kireth, he swung around the outstretched curved blade of the statue.

[Move: NW, N, NE]

He then quickly accelerated into the nearest ghoul…

[Charge]

[Charge: N, N]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #03: 1d20+10+1: 23] - hits!

[Damage: 1d10r2+7: 14] plus [1d8: 3 charge damage]

The dwarf’s hammer slammed into the ghoul’s chest knocking it back against the wall of the tiny alcove.

Combat
Ghoul #04

The ghoul furthest away slowly ducked under the chain before scanning the chamber. It seemed to sense Khalin as the closest victim it moved in for the kill quickly.

[Move: S, W, W]

As it moved close it drew back one of its arms and slashed at the dwarf’s flank with razor sharp claws.

[Claws]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 17 vs Khalin’s AC (22)] - misses!

Khalin managed to swing his shield around just in time and the ghoul met blank steel instead of flesh.

Combat
Kireth Majere

‘Ghouls. Ruddy ghouls!’ Kireth echoed the dwarf’s words in his head. Indeed, undead again. Necromancy had always fascinated the mage but never appealed. Despite what others may think of him, he was a firm believer that dead is dead and it should stay that way.

Finding a way so that dead can’t ever happen, well, that was different. Kireth did not necessarily agree that you had to accept the eventuality of death.

The mage strategically decided to keep his cards close to his chest until they knew the extent of what they were dealing with. The undead had an uncanny knack of wearing you down by sheer numbers and the mage wanted to be sure that these were to be the only ones. His eyes focused on the two assailing Khalin.

[Nightmare Eruption]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #04’s Will: 1d20+9: 16] - hits!

[Damage: 1d8+5: 10]

[Ghoul #03 takes 4 psychic splash damage]

The creatures were weak-willed things, pitiful in Kireth’s eyes. The simple spell he threw at them seemed to hold fast and make them spasm and squirm. The one on Khalin’s right bore the brunt of the spell, its claws reaching up to its head to hold them there fast whilst it shrieked with pain.

The other joined its comrade soon after, raising its head to cry out.

It was only then that Kireth, and Khalin behind his shield, noticed the ghoul had no eyes, only empty sockets where eyes would once have been.

Combat
Ghoul #03

It took a moment for the pitiful creature to recover from the mage’s spell. It could sense the dwarf before it, though, his life burning bright. With untold hate the ghoul struck out with its limbs, its tattered and bedraggled clothes flailing as it struck.

[Claws]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 28 vs Khalin’s AC (22)] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+4: 9] and [Immobilized (Save Ends)]

The claws cut past Khalin’s shield and raked across his cheek, drawing a thin line of blood. The touch was icy cold and the warlord could feel his limbs stiffen and his own eyes darken at the edges.

Combat
Zero Uhlit

‘Daaaaaahhhhh!’ Zero cried, as the ghoul nearest to him shambled from the shadowy recess.

[Move: NW, NW]

He backpedalled to his friends, fumbled for his crossbow and loosed a bolt at the thing.

[Sly Flourish]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #05: 1d20+9-2: 14] - misses!

The rogue’s aim was hasty, however, and the bolt sang past the ghoul’s shoulder and skittered against the stonework in the recess.

Combat
Ghoul #02

From the hidden chamber nearest Tradden another ghoul ducked under the chain. This one staggered across the passage, intent on something that its eyeless face appeared to see, grasping the chain with both hands until it got close to Beltak, ducking under Tradden’s blades.

[Move: S, SE]

It took one long-fingered hand from the chain and struck out at the scribe, trying to reach past his shield and tear at his murmuring lips.

[Claws]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 19 vs Beltak’s AC (19)] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+4: 9] and [Immobilized (Save Ends)]

The claws were unnervingly accurate, cutting across Beltak’s face with a swift rake.

Combat
Beltak Ancaron

‘They don’t seem to be moving slowly to me,’ called Beltak to Tradden over the melee as he ducked another blow from the ghoul in front of him. ‘But we keep them here, right?’ he asked as he swung his mace around in an arc.

[Healing Strike]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #02: 1d20+6: 25] - hits!

[Damage: 2d8+1: 12] plus [5 radiant vulnerability damage] and [Marked]

[Beltak spends a Healing Surge and regains 11+4: 15 hit points]

The mace landed a hefty blow in the ghoul’s chest with a flash of yellow light. The creature let go of the chain for a moment to cover what would have once been it eyes.

‘Not sure my legs can carry me anywhere, in any case!’ the scribe continued shouting at Tradden.

[Saving Throw vs Immobilization: 1d20+1: 16] - success!

The thrill of the blow, however, brought vigour to the scribe, and he could feel the chill of the ghoul’s touch leaving him.

Combat
Ghoul #05

The ghoul furthest away had not even seemed to have noticed Zero’s hasty shot, ignoring the rogue and following the chain along the wall straight towards Kireth.

[Move: N, W, W, W]

It kept its head down, fingering the top of the chain as it skipped over the stone floor with a limping stride. It closed in quickly, though, and grasped out with both its claws.

[Claws]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 20 vs Kireth’s AC (18)] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+4: 9] and [Immobilized (Save Ends)]

The claws bit through Kireth’s robes easily, raking across his arm, and bringing a numbing cold.

Combat
Ghoul #06

The last of the ghouls clambered out of its recess, hissing and spitting. It turned towards the group and ran down the passageway.

[Move: N, E, E]

Its path was blocked by the other ghouls, though, both Tradden and Beltak out of reach of even its long arms. It had to be content with hissing and spluttering behind the other two.

Combat
Tradden Aversward

Tradden stood tall next to Beltak and Zero.

‘Get ready to duck…’ the fighter whispered. He then held his frosty longsword above his head. The light from the various sources flashed along the blade impressively. Zero knew what was coming, but Beltak was only a fraction of a second quick enough to temporarily crouch as the blade swung around to try and eviscerate the ghouls who shambled forward to try and extinguish the bright light.

[Come And Get It!]

[Close Burst 3] with [Damage: 1d8+3: 7]

[Burst Attack vs Ghoul #01’s Will: 1d20+12: 23] - hits!

[Damage: 7] and [Marked]

[Burst Attack vs Ghoul #02’s Will: 1d20+12: 29] - hits!

[Damage: 7] and [Marked]

[Burst Attack vs Ghoul #03’s Will: 1d20+12: 14] - misses!

[Marked]

[Burst Attack vs Ghoul #04’s Will: 1d20+12: 15] - hits!

[Pull: SW, W] and [Damage: 7] and [Marked]

[Burst Attack vs Ghoul #05’s Will: 1d20+12: 24] - hits!

[Cannot Pull] and [Marked]

[Burst Attack vs Ghoul #06’s Will: 1d20+12: 20] - hits!

[Cannot Pull] and [Marked]

Tradden had caught the light well and it distracted all of the ghouls. The two closest him lowered their guard and the young fighter struck with his slash, just as one of the others lumbered towards him almost hypnotised into the follow-through.

The others, although distracted, could not get close to him, blocked by either Khalin, Kireth, or the other ghouls in the corridor.

Combat
Ghoul #01

Tradden’s blades did not stop moving even when the ghouls re-asserted themselves. The first of the creatures almost stumbled into the young fighter’s slashes.

[Tradden: Rain of Steel Stance]

[Damage: 1d8+3: 4]

It took a glancing blow before grabbing hold of the chain for support. With its other arm it swung wildly in the general direction of the young fighter’s face.

[Claws]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 29 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+4: 7] and [Immobilized (Save Ends)]

Despite Tradden’s whirling stance the ghoul managed to find an opening, drawing a thin line of blood down the young fighter’s cheek. The touch took the breath out of him.

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

Khalin was still cursing his curiosity. ‘This is what happens when you go without ale for too long,’ he grumbled under his breath. His legs refused to respond, but the ghoul he’d struck before was still pinned in its alcove before him, and another was wedged between the dwarf and Tradden — this one would pay…

[Warlord’s Strike]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #04: 1d20+10+2: 29] - hits!

[Damage: 2d10r2+7: 27] and [Bloodied]

[Allies gain +2 to damage against Ghoul #04 until end of next turn]

The hammer pummelled the creature with a sickening crunch, shattering the arm that held onto the chain causing the eyeballs to jangle against wall where they could, the tautness of the chain now gone.

The warlord did not look to be finished yet, however.

[Action Point]

[Khalin gains a Standard Action]

Despite being unable to move his legs, the warlord was buoyed by the strike and looked to push the advantage against his foes. Swinging Aecris back in a fluid motion he brought the mighty craghammer to bear on the other ghoul, still hissing in the alcove before him…

[Melee Basic Attack - Craghammer]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #03: 1d20+10: 18] - misses!

The swing missed, crashing into the stone at the side of the alcove. With that Khalin shrugged against the numbing coddling his legs…

[Saving Throw vs Immobilization: 1d20: 10] - success!

But though for a moment it seemed his limbs would not respond, the dwarf finally found himself with the renewed strength to move.

Combat
Ghoul #04

The ghoul hissed in pain as its arm dangled loosely at its side. Trapped between the dwarf and the young fighter it was pressed further into Tradden’s slicing blades.

[Tradden: Rain of Steel Stance]

[Damage: 1d8+3: 11]

The young fighter’s shortsword sliced it across its midriff, but the thing did not fall. Instead it threw out its other arm, trying to rake any flesh it could find.

[Claws]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 27 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+4: 8] and [Immobilized (Save Ends)]

It staggered as it struck but the claws still managed to sweep across Tradden’s thigh, spreading their chilling touch to match the marks upon his face.

Combat
Kireth Majere

The mage hissed at the pain that coursed quickly down his arm and into his body. He recognised the feeling of weakness as it spread and was not surprised to find himself rooted, his legs failing and his knees starting to fold. This would be over quickly if he did not react.

He drew back his arm, thankfully still working, and formed a fist. Then he thrust it forward at the ghoul’s chest, shouting the word of power mere inches before making contact.

[Spectral Ram]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #05’s Fortitude: 1d20+9: 28] - hits!

[Damage: 2d10+5: 18] and [Push: E, E, E] and [Knocked Prone]

‘Zero!’ he called over his left shoulder. ‘If you could help put this one down.’

[Saving Throw vs Immobilization: 1d20: 10] - success!

Free of the ghoul’s presence and the warmth of satisfaction of action, the mage’s brief torpor passed quickly.

Combat
Ghoul #03

Backed into the alcove the ghoul before Khalin hissed. Its empty eye sockets still seemed to burn with malevolence to the dwarf, but the head appeared focused on Tradden, rather than the warlord. The dwarf was merely an obstacle in the way to the young fighter.

With a screech it lunged at Khalin, trying to bowl past him with a flailing arm.

[Claws]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12-2: 18 vs Khalin’s AC (22)] - misses!

The warlord was ready for the attack, thrusting out his shield and blocking the clumsy swipe.

Combat
Zero Uhlit

‘Absolutely!’ Zero replied heartily to the wizard’s request.

He took aim at the floored ghoul and squeezed the trigger of his trusty crossbow.

[Sly Flourish]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #05: 1d20+9+2: 17] - misses!

‘Curses!’ spat the rogue as the bolt flew high and clattered against the curved sword of the statue and tumbling to the floor. For a moment Zero thought he saw the statue move, flickering to its right and twisting, but it must have been his eyes playing tricks on him.

Combat
Ghoul #02

In front of Beltak the eyeless ghoul tried to duck and evade Tradden’s whirling blades with little success, the sharp edges cutting across its grey skin.

[Tradden: Rain of Steel Stance]

[Damage: 1d8+3: 4]

A shrill keening escaped its paper-thin lips as it switched its attention from the scribe to the young fighter, drawn by Tradden’s threat.

[Claws]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 32 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - critical hit!

[Damage: 1d6+4: 12] and [Immobilized (Save Ends)]

The claws dug deep into Tradden’s exposed neck and the chill and pain the young fighter already bore intensified.

Combat
Beltak Ancaron

With the ghouls’ attention seemingly turned onto Tradden, Beltak lowered his guard a little and began to utter a prayer to Pelor.

[Light of Arvandor]

[Area Burst 1 centred on Zero] with [Damage: 1d8+5: 12] - interrupted!

As the scribe intoned the words of power, the two nearest ghouls used the opportunity to strike at him.

[Ghoul #01: Melee Basic Attack - Claws]

[Opportunity Attack: 1d20+12-2: 23 vs Beltak’s AC (19)] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+4: 6] and [Immobilized (Save Ends)]

The first ghoul struck, surprising Beltak with its ferocity, and the scribe could feel a chill begin to spread throughout his body. The second ghoul lurched in with its own, attempting to sink them deep into the scribe’s arm.

[Ghoul #02: Melee Basic Attack - Claws]

[Opportunity Attack: 1d20+12-2: 26 vs Beltak’s AC (19)] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+4: 10] and [Immobilized (Save Ends)]

The final words of Beltak’s prayer escaped his lips with a rush and a scream as the scribe stiffened.

[Light of Arvandor]

[Area Burst 1 centred on Zero] with [Damage: 1d8+5: 12]

[Burst Attack vs Ghoul #01’s Will: 1d20+8: 26] - hits!

[Damage: 12] plus [5 radiant vulnerability damage]

[Burst Attack vs Ghoul #02’s Will: 1d20+8: 27] - hits!

[Damage: 12] plus [5 radiant vulnerability damage] and [Bloodied]

[Burst Attack vs Ghoul #03’s Will: 1d20+8: 15] - hits!

[Damage: 12] plus [5 radiant vulnerability damage] and [Bloodied]

[Burst Attack vs Ghoul #04’s Will: 1d20+8: 24] - hits!

[Damage: 12] plus [5 radiant vulnerability damage] and [Dead]

[Burst Attack vs Ghoul #05’s Will: 1d20+8: 15] - hits!

[Damage: 12] plus [5 radiant vulnerability damage] and [Bloodied]

[Burst Attack vs Ghoul #06’s Will: 1d20+8: 18] - hits!

[Damage: 12] plus [5 radiant vulnerability damage]

[All allies gain +2 AC until end of Beltak’s next turn]

The light cascaded from Beltak’s symbol, tumbling over his friends and then striking harshly at the ghouls surrounding them. Three began to burn with an acrid stench, the one between Tradden and Khalin toppled over with a crash to the floor.

[Saving Throw vs Immobilization: 1d20+1: 16] - success!

The chill had been brief for the scribe. The power of his prayer chasing away his own numbness as quickly as it had come.

Combat
Ghoul #05

The ghoul on the floor staggered to its feet.

[Move: Stand]

Its socketless eyes seemed to stare coldly at Tradden before shifting slightly to the mage. With arms flailing it charged at the hooded half-elf.

[Charge]

[Charge: W, W, NW]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12+1-2: 14 vs Kireth’s AC (18+2)] - misses!

The mage was ready for the ghoul’s retort, however, and kept the swinging limbs away with the butt of his staff.

Combat
Ghoul #06

Beyond the wall of melee the ghoul hissed and spat, clutching the chain on the wall, seething that it could not get past its allies and attack the human with the swords, blocked in and prevented from reaching its quarry.

Combat
Tradden Aversward

One down — more to go. The same old story. Tradden had been in enough fights to know that there could be no let up. With that he swung a mighty blow at one of the nearest ghouls.

[Cleave]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #02: 1d20+12: 14] - misses!

[Marked]

Such was the fighter’s enthusiasm he completely mistimed his swing, catching his blade on the wall next to him. There were sparks, but nothing productive.

Growling to himself he tried to gain control of his taut leg muscles.

[Saving Throw vs Immobilization: 1d20+1: 13] - success!

Shaking off the number sensation Tradden readied himself for the next round… but a creeping chill, as though someone were staringly intently at his back, began to claw its way up his spine.

Combat
Ghoul #01

As Tradden swung fruitlessly at the ghoul to his left the one to the right took the opportunity to dive in.

[Tradden: Rain of Steel Stance]

[Damage: 1d8+3: 8] and [Bloodied]

Tradden caught the creature on his backswing, however, opening a deep wound across its grey chest. The thing did not seem to care and kept its push, trying to open up a cut of its own along the fighter’s flank.

[Claws]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 31 vs Tradden’s AC (21+2)] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+4: 6] and [Bloodied] and [Immobilized (Save Ends)]

The ghoul managed to rake down the side of Tradden and let out a hiss of delight.

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

Khalin could hear the melee behind him and shouted over his shoulder to Tradden, hoping to lift the fighter’s spirits: ‘Next time I’m about to pull a chain like that, stop me!’

The black humour brought a wry smile to his friend’s face, despite the claws slashing at him.

[Inspiring Word]

[Tradden spends a Healing Surge and regains 2d6+15: 20 hit points]

[Last Legion Officer: Tradden receives +2 to AC and Reflex until start of next turn]

[Tradden is no longer Bloodied]

The dwarf still had the ghoul before him cornered, and once more tried to press home the advantage…

[Melee Basic Attack - Craghammer]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #03: 1d20+10: 21] - hits!

[Damage: 1d10r2+7: 17]

The swing was met with the crunch of bone, but the creature still stood.

Combat
Statue

The others had their backs turned but both Zero and Kireth could now see plainly the statue, or part of the statue start to turn. It wasn’t the solid rock that moved, no grating or scraping, it seemed to be the essence of the statue, a wraith or shadow within it, taken from the dimly glowing black stones.

[Large Statue added at F9]

The thing lifted and turned, unfurling its three arms and the sickles that it held, its three hoods searching out across the chamber.

Combat
Kireth Majere

‘Now there’s something you don’t see every day,’ quipped the half-elf as he regarded the statue. ‘Anyone free to help me with this ghoul? I have a feeling you’re going to need me freed up to deal with our new friend here.’

As the ghoul before him continued to weave its arms this way and that, fighting to get passed the mage’s staff, he considered the options. He felt the desperate urge to deal with the statue but at this time, given its shifting state, an attack upon it may have limited effect.

Despite his plea only moments ago, the best course would be to try put the ghoul down. Backed into a corner with limited room for manoeuvre there was, of course, only one spell for it.

[Magic Missile]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #05] - automatic hit!

[Damage: 2+4+1: 7]

The bolt slammed into the ghoul’s chest, knocking it back for a brief moment. However, the thing continued to assail the mage, trying to find a way past Kireth’s trusty staff

Combat
Ghoul #03

With the taunts and shouts from Tradden subsided, the ghoul within the alcove could concetrate more on Khalin before it. The warlord seemed comfortable behind his shield, but the ghoul thrust and swung its limbs in attempt to find some weakness in his defence.

[Claws]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 31 vs Khalin’s AC (22+2)] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+4: 11] and [Immobilized (Save Ends)]

The shield was no barrier to the ghoul as it feinted and then struck a solid blow to the dwarf’s shoulder, its claws biting through the scale mail to rake across Khalin’s skin.

Combat
Zero Uhlit

Zero was not particularly happy where he stood — the ghoul and now the statue far too close for his liking, not allowing him to steady his shot. However, there weren’t many good alternatives. He backed off the best he could, hoping to slip away from sight.

[Fleeting Ghost]

[Move: N]

[Stealth Check: 1d20+14: 17] - success!

[Zero is hidden from all enemies bar the statue and gains Combat Advantage]

With a little bit of cover the rogue levelled his crossbow, taking more care with his aim this time.

[Gloaming Cut]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #05: 1d20+9+2: 31] - critical hit!

[Damage: 1d6+1+2: 9] plus [2d8: 16 sneak damage] plus [1d6: 1 critical damage] and [Dead]

[Stealth Check: 1d20+14: 24] - success!

[Zero is hidden from all enemies bar the statue and gains Combat Advantage]

The bolt thudded into the empty eye socket of the ghoul and it toppled instantly with barely a thrash or hiss.

Combat
Ghoul #02

Holding the chain with its right hand clutched tightly around the links, the ghoul in front of Beltak used it as a lever to to help it dodge and sway from Tradden’s blows.

[Tradden: Rain of Steel Stance]

[Damage: 1d8+3: 8]

There was no escape from the whirling swords, however, and the ghoul took more cuts along its flank.

The ghoul wanted to stem the burning light from the priest, but Tradden had its attention. More importantly the young fighter was suffering from the cold of the ghouls’ blows, and would be an easier target.

Instead of lashing out with its arms the ghoul let go of the chain and jumped up, trying to sink its teeth into Tradden’s exposed neck.

[Ghoulish Bite]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+10: 27 vs Tradden’s AC (21+2)] - hits!

[Damage: 3d6+4: 12] and [Stunned (Save Ends)]

The pain of the bite coursed through Tradden’s body and the young fighter could feel himself grow rigid with the cold.

Combat
Beltak Ancaron

Looking over his shoulder Beltak spied the threat that Kireth had warned them of, but with Tradden’s blades beside him stopping their whirl he knew there was pressing need for his help right where he stood. The statue would have to wait for a moment.

The scribe stepped back to make himself a little room.

[Shift: E]

With his arms now free he pulled out his holy symbol, pointing it at the ghoul directly in front of him, uttering the words of prayer.

[Sacred Flame]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #02’s Reflex: 1d20+8: 20] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+5: 10] plus [5 radiant vulnerability damage] and [Dead]

[Tradden can make a saving throw]

Burning yellow light burst from the symbol and engulfed the ghoul, bathing Tradden in a glorious glow.

[Tradden Saving Throw vs Stunned: 1d20+1: 18] - success!

Tradden stuttered and spluttered as feeling returned to his limbs and he awkwardly continued to swing his blades in a defensive posture almost as though nothing had happened.

Combat
Ghoul #06

With its companion smoking on the floor the ghoul nearest the western doors stepped lithely over the corpse aiming for Tradden.

[Move: E]

Weaving through the blades this ghoul also tried to bite at Tradden.

[Ghoulish Bite]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+10: 16 vs Tradden’s AC (21+2)] - misses!

This one wasn’t as quick as its fallen companion, however, and despite his sluggishness Tradden was able to easily dodge the snarling jaws.

Combat
Tradden Aversward

Bouyed by the warming touch of Pelor, Tradden lashed out again, keen to take care of the ghouls in front of him so he could find out what in Correlon’s name was going on behind him!

[Cleave]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #01: 1d20+12: 15] - misses!

[Marked]

In his enthusiasm the fighter repeated his mistake from before in not allowing enough clearance for his longsword in the confined corridor.

[Saving Throw vs Immobilization: 1d20+1: 15] - success!

His anger did at least lead him to stamp one foot in anger, unintentionally breaking the ice in his veins caused by the clawing hands of the ghouls.

Combat
Ghoul #01

The ghoul had dodged Tradden’s main blow but could only sway into the path of the sweeps and cuts that rained in from the swift blades.

[Tradden: Rain of Steel Stance]

[Damage: 1d8+3: 7]

With the young fighter seemingly clear of the pains and colds that had frozen him to the spot only moments ago the ghoul decided not to lurch in with its rotting teeth but rather to rely on its sharp claws, raking them quickly across Tradden’s side.

[Claws]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 16 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - misses!

They caught the edge of the youth’s chainmail sleeves, however, resulting in only a screech of metal and a hiss from the ghoul.

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

Khalin grimaced as once more his legs refused to respond to his bidding. Thankfully his arms, however, had no such problem. The ghoul before him looked like it was ready to fall with one more well-placed strike and the dwarf wasted no more time taking aim…

[Melee Basic Attack - Craghammer]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #03: 1d20+10: 13] - misses!

But with Khalin’s movement impaired the ghoul easily dodged the blow. The dwarf cursed once more, but stole a quick glance over his shoulder to see that Zero and Beltak had downed their foes. The scribe looked to be starting to flag.

‘Good work, Beltak, keep going lad!’ the warlord encouraged.

[Inspiring Word]

[Beltak spends a Healing Surge and regains 2d6+11: 21 hit points]

[Last Legion Officer: Beltak receives +2 to AC and Reflex until start of next turn]

Turning back to his own predicament, Khalin shrugged his legs, willing them to move again…

[Saving Throw vs Immobilization: 1d20: 14] - success!

A smile returned to the dwarf’s face as he was free of the icy grip once more.

Combat
Statue

The essence of the statue glimmered with a dark sheen in the torchlight, translucent and glowing as though stars were at its core. Its blades matched that of the silent stone it left behind, curved and sharp, their edges catching the torchlight and reflecting it around the chamber.

Leaving the stone behind it floated towards the group, its faces shrouded by the cowls it wore.

[Move: W]

The sickles continued to unfurl as it stretched out its three arms as it hovered off the dias, standing a couple of feet higher than even Tradden and with a reach to match it began to swing, solidifying as it struck all in its path.

[Sickle Burst]

[Close Burst 2] with [Damage: 2d6+5: 12]

[Burst Attack: 1d20+13: 28 vs Khalin’s AC (22)] - hits!

[Damage: 12] and [Bloodied]

[Burst Attack: 1d20+13: 28 vs Kireth’s AC (18)] - hits!

[Damage: 12]

[Burst Attack: 1d20+13: 14 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - critical miss!

[Burst Attack: 1d20+13: 23 vs Zero’s AC (19)] - hits!

[Damage: 12]

[Burst Attack: 1d20+13: 28 vs Beltak’s AC (19+2)] - hits!

[Damage: 12]

[Statue loses Insubstantial and Phasing]

The blades cut into the group, catching all but Tradden. Khalin came off the worst, his back turned to the eidolon, and the slash drew a line of agony across his back.

As the dwarf risked a look over his shoulder he was caught by a look from within the hood, as were the other two, Zero and Kireth, that were looking directly at the apparition.

[Frightful Visage]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+10: 19 vs Khalin’s Will (17)] - hits!

[Dazed]

[Secondary Attack: 1d20+10: 23 vs Kireth’s Will (16)] - hits!

[Dazed]

[Tertiary Attack: 1d20+10: 30 vs Zero’s Will (17)] - critical hit!

[Push: SW] and [Dazed]

All three went white, Zero staggering back with his arms before his face.

Combat
Kireth Majere

Kireth’s mouth hung just for a moment. Although he had long suspected ‘something’ like this, it was still a “stand back and gasp” moment. As his mouth slowly closed he all but whispered the name ‘Skauril’. Not as a question but as fact. The whisper was just audible enough for Tradden to pick up on it.

In his slightly stunned state Kireth was running on instinct but situations like this is exactly why he had spent long hours in the “Chamber of Encounters” all that time ago in the mages’ school.

It served him well now as instinctively he began casting a spell to bite back at this foe.

[Force Orb]

[Primary Attack vs Statue’s Reflex: 1d20+9: 29] - critical hit!

[Damage: 2d8+5: 21] plus [1d6: 6 critical radiant damage]

The attack was just a reaction, but the strength and power of the spell was plain to see. A chunk of the cowl facing Kireth cast off from the head of the statue to explode against the wall in a shower of black dust and the wraith screamed and twisted.

[Saving Throw vs Dazed: 1d20: 8] - failure!

The mage still appeared to be in a state of shock, however, standing still and silent and watching the statue with a grim intent.

Combat
Ghoul #03

As the sound of shattering stone echoed around the chamber the ghoul within the alcove pressed its attack on the dazed dwarf. It struck out quickly with its arm, trying to capitalise upon the advantage it now had.

[Claws]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12+2: 30 vs Khalin’s AC (22)] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+4: 6] and [Immobilized (Save Ends)]

The creature raked down Khalin’s flank as the dwarf was caught turning towards the statue. The cold bit deep and he could feel his legs numbing once more.

Combat
Zero Uhlit

Zero started to desperately scramble away from the statue, despite the ghouls at his back. Almost on instinct he turned and shot to clear his path.

[Fleeting Spirit Strike]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #01: 1d20+9+2: 19] - hits!

[Damage: 2d6+4: 13] plus [2d8: 11 sneak damage] and [Dead]

[Shift: NW, W, W]

[Stealth Check: 1d20+14: 22] - success!

[Zero is hidden from all enemies except Ghoul #06 and gains Combat Advantage]

‘Aaaaargh!’ he screamed as he tumbled over the corpse of the ghoul as it sunk to the floor with the rogue’s bolt in its eye. ‘I am not enjoying this!’

[Saving Throw vs Dazed: 1d20+1: 11] - success!

The tumble into the corridor, at least, brought him cursing out of his stupor.

Combat
Beltak Ancaron

Beltak held his shield high against the statue before him, its curved blades swinging down in giant arcs at his head and shoulders. He had little place to go to free up some space for his prayers, the statue in front and a ghoul behind.

The rest of his comrades were faring well, though, most of the ghouls had been subdued, but Khalin was sorely pressed. Beltak uttered a short prayer to heal the dwarf’s wounds.

[Healing Word]

[Khalin spends a Healing Surge and regains 2d6+14+4: 27 hit points]

[Khalin is no longer Bloodied]

With the warlord invigorated, Beltak turned his attention to the statue and the ghoul behind him. From where he was he had little powers to combat the wraithlike figure that threatened to tear out of the stone, yet to attack the ghoul from here would draw the wrath of the statue, giving it an opportunity to strike with its blades.

‘Attack the wraith,’ Beltak urged Tradden as he moved close in on the ghoul.

[Shift: W]

With the hope that Tradden could get to the central foe, Beltak crashed down on the ghoul with his mace.

[Invigorating Assault]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #06: 1d20+6: 20] - hits!

[Damage: 1d8+1: 8]

[Tradden gains 4 temporary hit points]

The mace slammed into the ghoul’s chest, but the thing hung onto the chain to its right to avoid falling in a heap.

Combat
Ghoul #06

The ghoul kept itself upright with the help of the chain, trying to use the momentum to swing out of the way of Tradden’s blades that simply would not stop.

[Tradden: Rain of Steel Stance]

[Damage: 1d8+3: 5]

Two foes stood before it once more, the one with the blades more threatening. It threw out an arm at Tradden, hoping to catch him distracted by Beltak’s call.

[Claws]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+12: 20 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - misses!

The young fighter was far too quick for the ghoul’s clumsy effort, however, and he blocked the arm with an easy swipe of his shortsword.

Combat
Tradden Aversward

Tradden clenched his teeth at the name of Skauril — the whisper floating back from Kireth was doubly worrying. Firstly it meant Skauril might be alive, and might even be the statue now attacking them. Secondly it meant Kireth was worried enough to blurt it out and that was the really disturbing part — it was unlike the mage to lose his cool.

First things first, however, these ghouls were proving troublesome and needed cutting down.

[Footwork Lure]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #06: 1d20+12: 13] - critical miss!

[Marked]

Tradden twisted into a classic polka stance but caught his heel on one of his greatest ever foes — the wall next to him — and it knocked him completely off balance, his sword once again scraping down the stonework.

‘Oh, for Correlon's sake!’ he shouted in anger. ‘Kireth, get behind me!’

Better the mage was behind he and Beltak. The ghoul was an issue but the half-elf and Zero would be better placed dealing with that over the stone warrior. With that the fighter slyly cha-cha-cha’d out of the corridor and into the room proper, leaving the ghoul clawing at thin air.

[Shift: E]

‘A bit of space! Ha! Right, let’s dance!’ cried the fighter, bringing his longsword up from the floor into the midriff of the tri-armed effigy.

[Action Point]

[Tradden gains a Standard Action]

[Tradden gains +3 to attacks during Action Point]

[Tradden uses Khalin’s Bravura Presence]

[Villain’s Menace]

[Primary Attack vs Statue: 1d20+12+3: 24] - hits!

[Damage: 2d8+7: 14] and [Bloodied] and [Marked]

[Tradden receives +2 to attack and +4 to damage Statue for rest of encounter]

Tradden struck quickly, carving a significant chunk out of the body of the statue before expertly turning his blade aside into a secondary strike…

[Melee Basic Attack - Frost Longsword]

[Primary Attack vs Statue: 1d20+12+3+2: 26] - hits!

[Damage: 1d8+7+4: 12]

…which took off the end of one of the scythes, much to the delight of the cheering Khalin.

‘Go on, lad!’ encouraged the dwarf as he absent-mindedly shield-punched the ghoul behind him in the face, driving it back into the alcove once more.

The statue, of course, said nothing, but it was now looking a lot worse for wear — various parts of its stonework were now lying in equal measure with flecks of frost across the dusty and cracked tiling.

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

Bathed in the healing light of Pelor, Khalin felt the strength return to his body. Yet the foul touch of the ghoul still rooted him to the spot, and the ghastly visage beneath the spectral statueRsquo;s hood felt burned onto his retinas. That wasn’t Skauril, but Kireth’s uncharacteristic gasp at the sight beneath another of the cowls all but confirmed the dwarf’s suspicions.

Steeling himself he called to the mage: ‘Keep it together, Kireth, we’ve got this!’

[Melee Basic Attack - Craghammer]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #03: 1d20+10: 12] - misses!

Khalin hit the side of the alcove with his swing, dazed still by the statue’s fearful glance. The dwarf hoped to draw resolve from his own words as much as the half-elf might, despite his mistake in the melee.

[Saving Throw vs Immobilization: 1d20: 5] - failure!

[Saving Throw vs Dazed: 1d20: 7] - failure!

But the resolve did not come, the chill and befuddlement growing stronger.

Combat
Statue

The statue’s wraith had crept silently from the middle of the room but the group had reacted swiftly to the threat, one of the blades had been shattered and a cowl had been turned to dust. Even as the eidolon pushed forwards Tradden’s blade span and cut at it.

[Tradden: Rain of Steel Stance]

[Damage: 1d8+3+4: 11]

As the young fighter’s thrusts cut through the wraith it appeared to take a moment to stiffen its resolve.

[Sickle Burst]

[Recharge: 1d6: 4] - failure!

Even with its half-sickle the statue was deadly, its reach long and ranging. Tradden tried to keep his own long reach and blades outstretched to push the statue back, but it still managed to swipe at the young fighter’s midriff.

[Ghostly Sickle]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+15: 33 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - success!

[Damage: 2d6+5: 14]

The half-blade swept past Tradden’s defences and sliced into his midriff, cutting deep into the flesh.

Almost as soon as the blade struck the statue began to fade, becoming a ghostly outline of itself, the dark rock pulsing at its core.

[Unhallowed Stance]

[The statue gains resistance to damage]

In its ghostly state the even Tradden could not seem to harm it with his blades.

Combat
Kireth Majere

Still fighting to regain his full composure Kireth observed the statue fade. He recognised its incorporeal state for what it was and cursed out load. Knowing he could inflict no harm he half turned to move to a safer position behind the others but then he had a thought… a memory.

Perhaps he could inflict no physical harm but maybe, just maybe.

The mage turned back on the statue fixing it with his icy stare. All his concentration upon the deep, pulsing core.

[Nightmare Eruption]

[Primary Attack vs Statue’s Will: 1d20+9: 19] - misses!

The thought was fleeting, the fog clouding the mage’s mind perhaps playing tricks of their own. He shook his head, trying to rid himself of the images he had seen.

[Saving Throw vs Dazed: 1d20: 15] - success!

Slowly the fog appeared to part from his mind and the mage’s resolve grew alongside his ire.

Combat
Ghoul #03

The ghoul in the alcove appeared to straighten when the statue’s shadow began to fade. It stood taller and its limbs were stronger, fuller, and its actions were quicker. It struck out at Khalin, drawing the tiring warlord’s shield, before feinting and then lunging for his throat with its teeth.

[Ghoulish Bite]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+10: 23 vs Khalin’s AC (22)] - hits!

[Damage: 3d6+4: 17] plus [1d8: 3 necrotic damage] and [Stunned (Save Ends)]

The bite was chilling but burned like fire, coursing down the dwarf’s neck and into his chest. Then the feeling was gone. All feeling. It was all Khalin could do not to drop hbis hammer and shield.

Combat
Zero Uhlit

Zero fumbled at another bolt and loaded it into his crossbow. The statue seemed to be fading or something and that could only mean it needed to be left to the skills of Kireth or brute strength of Tradden. He couldn’t see Khalin, not the thing the warlord was fighting, the only target he could spot was the ghoul in front of him. He squeezed his trigger…

[Gloaming Cut]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #06: 1d20+9: 28] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+1+2: 4] and [Bloodied]

[Shift: SW, S]

[Stealth Check: 1d20+14: 28] - success!

[Zero is hidden from all enemies and gains Combat Advantage]

…and lithely rolled underneath the chain into the darkness of the alcove in a single movement.

The bolt grazed the ghoul’s flank, barely touching it, but did draw a gout of black, congealed blood that spurted against the wall and the chain.

Combat
Beltak Ancaron

Beltak saw Khalin stiffen from the ghoul’s bite and nearly topple. ‘Hold fast, Khalin!’ the scribe shouted and uttered a short prayer for the warlord.

[Healing Word]

[Khalin spends a Healing Surge and regains 2d6+14+4: 29 hit points]

[Khalin is no longer Bloodied]

With the ghoul in front of him seemingly concentrating on Tradden and the young fighter’s blades and taunts, Beltak decided to take a small risk, turning to his right once more and stretching out his symbol.

[Sacred Flame]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #03’s Reflex: 1d20+8: 20] - interrupted!

As the scribe concentrated on Khalin’s foe, the one next to him lashed out with it arm.

[Ghoul #06: Melee Basic Attack - Claws]

[Opportunity Attack: 1d20+12-2: 22 vs Beltak’s AC (19)] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+4: 8] and [Immobilized (Save Ends)]

Beltak could feel the cold of the undying creature begin to fill his limbs, but the prayer he had started could not be stopped by a mere scratch.

[Sacred Flame]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #03’s Reflex: 1d20+8: 20] - hits!

[Damage: 1d6+5: 10] plus [5 radiant vulnerability damage] and [Dead]

[Khalin can make a saving throw]

A shaft of bright light sprang from Beltak’s symbol, passing through Khalin and cascaded into the ghoul. The thing burned brightly, blackened, and then fell at the dwarf’s feet. The light bathed Khalin…

[Khalin Saving Throw vs Stunned: 1d20: 6] - failure!

…but it could not shift the torpor that plagued the dwarf.

[Saving Throw vs Immobilized: 1d20+1: 7] - failure!

The prayers were not enough to warm Beltak’s slowly chilling limbs either.

Combat
Ghoul #06

Despite Tradden’s taunts the last remaining ghoul could not ignore Beltak’s exposed back, and jumped on it, trying to sink its teeth into the scribe’s pale skin.

[Ghoulish Bite]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+10-2: 22 vs Beltak’s AC (19)] - hits!

[Damage: 3d6+4: 13] and [Stunned (Save Ends)] and [Bloodied]

The scribe went rigid as the ghoul ripped at his flesh, not even able to utter a scream.

Combat
Tradden Aversward

Tradden, as he was wont to do, looked around and took stock of the battle.

Khalin was in good physical shape but looked like he was otherwise enjoying a tenday next third-day, or whatever day he thought it was. The statue and the ghouls had landed some good, disorienting blows. The dwarf was out of it until he shook his head clear.

Zero was where he felt most comfortable and would no doubt continue shooting bolts at the nearest ghoul until it was dead. Well, more dead.

Poor Beltak had seen better times and would need all of Pelor’s attention for a little while if he were to see another day.

That just left him and Kireth to take on the statue. An odd partnership in battle, but one which would have to work.

Noting that the statue was preoccupied with the mage for a moment, Tradden took the opportunity to throw himself sideways, neatly barrel-rolling under one flailing scythe before arriving, ready to attack, in a flanking position diagonally opposite the half-elf.

[Pass Forward]

[Move: NE, E, E]

He would have to draw the shadow of the stone’s attention away from Kireth of course (no doubt the mage would shower him with cheerful thanks for days — that made him chuckle), but before he did he had the opportunity to strike freely at its rear.

[Surprising Stab]

[Primary Attack vs Statue’s Reflex: 1d20+12+2+2: 23] - hits!

[Damage: 4] and [Grants Combat Advantage] and [Marked]

[Damage reduced to 0 due to Damage Resistance]

[Secondary Attack vs Statue: 1d20+11+2+2: 18] - misses!

Tradden’s first flick out with his longsword did indeed take the statically-challenged stonework by surprise but to Tradden’s own surprise his blade did absolutely no damage this time. So surprised was he the secondary attack was only half-hearted and missed entirely. Something decidedly magicky was going on.

‘Err,… Kireth!?!’

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

Khalin was regretting pulling that damned chain more by the second. With the ghoul before him felled, he scrunched his eyes and tried once more to fight through the fog and will his body back into action…

[Saving Throw vs Stunned: 1d20: 5] - failure!

[Saving Throw vs Dazed: 1d20: 4] - failure!

[Saving Throw vs Immobilized: 1d20: 16] - success!

The ice in his legs was beginning to thaw, but the dwarf’s mind was still cloudy.

Combat
Statue

The ghostly statue kept its stationary position, assuming its stance, regardless of Tradden’s thrashing blades.

[Tradden: Rain of Steel Stance]

[Damage: 1d8+3+4: 14]

[Damage reduced to 0 due to Damage Resistance]

The young fighter’s thrusts and strokes appeared to pass straight through it, without any effect.

[Sickle Burst]

[Recharge: 1d6: 6] - success!

The veins of dark rock at the centre of the apparition began to pulse and throb with renewed vigour as its arms began to stretch out, the two sickles and the broken blade beginning to spin as the statue lost it ghostliness and struck out at those closest.

[Sickle Burst]

[Close Burst 2] with [Damage: 2d6+5: 13]

[Burst Attack: 1d20+13+2: 16 vs Khalin’s AC (22)] - critical miss!

[Burst Attack: 1d20+13: 12 vs Kireth’s AC (18)] - critical miss!

[Burst Attack: 1d20+13: 26 vs Tradden’s AC (21)] - hits!

[Damage: 13]

[Burst Attack: 1d20+13+2: 26 vs Beltak’s AC (19)] - hits!

[Damage: 13]

[Statue loses Meditative Stance and Damage Resistance]

The statue became rock once more as the blades sliced through Tradden and Beltak. The broken blade swirled just short of Khalin and then Kireth, the pair saved by sheer luck.

Combat
Kireth Majere

The whirling blades had missed his throat by a whisker. Kireth gulped. Had he done so a moment ago his Adam’s Apple may have been removed, it had been that close.

Not that they had gone very far but Kireth quickly re-gathered his wits all the same. Now that the statue was solid again if he placed this right he could harm it without injuring the others, if he placed it right.

[Shock Sphere]

[Area Burst 2 centred on H10] with [Damage: 2d6+5: 8]

[Burst Attack vs Statue’s Reflex: 1d20+9: 25] - hits!

[Damage: 8]

The lightning cascaded and arced around the stone creature, running up and down the dark streaks like rivers of fire. For a moment Kireth hoped he had felled the thing, but then the lightning faded and the statue remained.

Combat
Zero Uhlit

Content that he had found himself a nice safe alcove, Zero cautiously peered around the side of the wall. The statue appeared to have solidified, but it was the ghoul that was causing the most worry, about to jump on Beltak. He closed one eye, lined up his shot, and fired.

[Sly Flourish]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #06: 1d20+9+2: 15] - misses!

The rogue hadn’t accounted for the chain at his side and rattled it at just the wrong moment. The ghoul’s ears appeared to prick up and it sank to its haunches to let the bolt sail harmlessly past. A whisker closer and it would have taken Beltak out.

[Fleeting Ghost]

[Stealth Check: 1d20+14: 34] - critical success!

[Zero is hidden from all enemies and gains Combat Advantage]

The rogue contemplated ducking out once more, but decided he might need his luck for later.

Combat
Beltak Ancaron

The ghoul in front of him looked ready to pounce but there was little Beltak could do about it. It dropped quickly down and a bolt skittered past the scribe’s shoulder, but Beltak was too frozen to move or dodge.

His mind befuddled it was all he could do to whisper a short prayer to Pelor before the thing before him tore out his throat.

[Saving Throw vs Stunned: 1d20+1: 10] - success!

[Saving Throw vs Immobilized: 1d20+1: 16] - success!

Warmth and strength slowly returned to his limbs, but perhaps it was too late.

Combat
Ghoul #06

The ghoul hissed triumphantly at Beltak before him, the scribe motionless and his shield lowered. It dived towards him, teeth bared, aiming for the scribe’s throat.

[Ghoulish Bite]

[Primary Attack: 1d20+10+2: 16 vs Beltak’s AC (19)] - misses!

Its triumph was misplaced, as was its arm that caught around the chain it had been holding, tripping the ghoul off balance and saving the scribe from a ghastly end.

Combat
Tradden Aversward

This statue was proving as hard as it looked (this statement was a clever play on words that Tradden was very proud of, even though he knew in his heart of hearts that it was, in fact, rubbish) and needed to be taken out before those wild sweeping strikes cut them all down.

Studying the main body of the statue he saw that their repeated strikes had done it some damage — there were various cracks and fractures throughout its torso. The fighter’s mind wandered back to old Mr Ironfoot’s workshop. The dwarf had tried to teach the gawky boy about stonework and mining with a notable amount of tolerance. The veteran of a thousand mines (so he said — Tradden was aware of only a handful on the islands, but was too polite to say) would have been proud of his charge as he sized up the most likely looking fractured section for what he had in mind…

‘One, precise tap… just… here…!’ murmured the fighter.

[Melee Basic Attack - Frost Longsword]

[Primary Attack vs Statue: 1d20+12+2+2: 25] - hits!

[Damage: 1d8+7+4: 16] and [Dead]

It wasn’t the fastest or the strongest of hits but it did have an immediate effect. As soon as Tradden’s calculated stab hit home, deep into the body of the automaton, it froze. Then, a few seconds later, when it looked like the strike had made no impact whatsoever, the thing crumbled into four or five separate parts, neatly but noisily. In the end Tradden was left standing there, sword sticking out into midair — the shine from his white teeth almost lighting up the room.

‘Krz-jhakak!’ he whispered, which was (as far as he could tell) the nearest thing the dwarves had to ‘Yeah, baby!’

[Move: SW, W, W, W]

Composing himself and realising that Khalin wasn’t going to be able to assist with the remaining ghoul just yet, Tradden leapt over the rubble to stand by the side of the fast sinking Beltak.

Combat
Khalin Grundokri

Khalin was dimly aware of the commotion behind him, a yell of triumph from Tradden cutting through the fog in his mind. He concentrated hard once more, trying to refocus…

[Saving Throw vs Stunned: 1d20: 17] - success!

[Saving Throw vs Dazed: 1d20: 6] - failure!

The ringing in Khalin’s ears began to subside, and he could just about tell that the statue had been destroyed behind him.

Combat
Kireth Majere

Kireth breathed a sigh of relief, although he kept it quiet enough for the others not to hear. Even at college there had been something about automatons that unnerved the half-elf and he was glad to see this one fall.

Pushing thoughts of the statue from his head, Kireth moved around the corner so that he could see the remaining foe.

[Move: N]

Seeing the ghoul, Kireth reacted on instinct once more and threw one of his trusted magic bolts, watching with satisfaction as it exploded upon the undead’s chest.

[Magic Missile]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #06] - automatic hit!

[Damage: 2+4+1: 7]

The thing hissed back at the mage as it staggered a little, but it did not fall.

Combat
Zero Uhlit

Zero loaded another bolt into his crossbow and peered around the edge of the alcove. The ghoul had its back to him, but Beltak looked in a sorry state. He squeezed the trigger and trusted his luck…

[Rogue’s Luck]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #06: 1d20+9+2: 21] - hits!

[Damage: 2d6+4: 10] plus [2d8: 9 sneak damage]

The ghoul staggered forwards, back the way it had come after Kireth’s magical bolt, almost lurching onto Beltak, the bolt quivering between the thing’s shoulder blades. It was a good strike, Zero knew that, but not quite enough to topple it.

[Fleeting Ghost]

[Stealth Check: 1d20+14: 23] - success!

[Zero is hidden from all enemies and gains Combat Advantage]

With a silent curse the rogue slipped back unseen into the shadows of the alcove.

Combat
Beltak Ancaron

Beltak could barely stand, his energy spent, and his mind befuddled. He could just about focus on the thing before him, its empty eye sockets staring back at him and his own blood dripping off the monstrousity’s crooked teeth.

It took all of the scribe’s remaining energy to stagger backwards a step.

[Shift: NE]

As he moved back he raised his symbol in one last prayer, the edge of his eyesight slowly dulling.

[Lance of Faith]

[Primary Attack vs Ghoul #06’s Reflex: 1d20+8: 12] - misses!

But the prayer stumbled out of his lips and the power did not come.

Combat
Ghoul #06

Somehow sensing that the scribe’s last breath was but moments away and the lifeforce he carried was there for the taking the ghoul lurched forwards, letting go of the chain, oblivious to the swinging blades of Tradden.

[Tradden: Rain of Steel Stance]

[Damage: 1d8+3: 8] and [Dead]

Perhaps its lack of normal vision impaired its judgement as Tradden’s shortsword caught it across the neck, and for a moment the young fighter’s breath caught in his throat as he thought the thing had got past his defence.

However, it slumped forwards to the floor, the head parted from its shoulders, and lay still and silent in the dust and rubble of the statue.
